Using hauppauge remote with server/client

I think I already know the answer but I'm still hoping that I'm wrong.

I have a Windows Home Server that lives in a utility closet downstairs that I recently stuck my Hauppauge 2250 in and I installed the client on the machine in my bedroom upstairs. With the Hauppauge setup the remote IR sensor connects to the card so I'd have to extend the IR cable about 30ft through some less than conventional magic. That will probably just leave me with a really long cable that won't carry a signal but who knows.

I think my second more realistic option is get a USB IR receiver from a Windows Media Center machine and use it on my client. I'm not sure if this will work but it's got to have a better chance than the previous option.

Let me know if there's another option that I'm not aware of or if either of the options above have been tried and verified to work.

Thanks in advance.

What are you trying to acheive? If you want to use a remote on a Sage client, it has to be connected to the client. You can't have the remote input on the server and have it control the client. If you are trying to have the Hauppauge card do IR blasting, shouldn't the source be close to the capture device?

Assuming you want a remote to use on your client, you could get a USB-UIRT and use it in combination with any remote or you could get an MCE receiver/remote combo. Both of those are valid options depending on the features you want/need and the amount of money you want (or are forced) to spend.

Yes, I am planning on using the remote on my client. I don't need the IR blaster for my setup.

Thanks for the info and quick response, it looks like I'll be hunting down a good MCE remote.
