Upgrade to Server 7?
I'm upgrading from SageTV version 6.6 to the beta 7 release, but I'm not clear what I need to download and install. I have an HD200 media extender that I use with SageTV, but I've never been very clear about the "client" vs "server" nomenclature. I assume the server is on the PC and the HD200 is the client, but does that mean that I have to download and install the SageTV Media Server Add-In Version 7.0.10 Beta in addition to the SageTV Media Center Version 7.0.10 Beta download? Do I also need to download and install the Client Beta too??
Sorry for the noob question, but I just don't have an intuitive grasp of the way this works. There's also some sort of note that Version 6 server doesn't work with Version 7 client, and visa versa. Do I need to uninstall all the Version 6 software? Last edited by freewheeling; 06-10-2010 at 05:50 PM. Reason: Found answer to update pricing so delete that part of question. |

What OS are you running? If it's WHS, you'll want the one listed in the Beta announcement as SageTV for Windows Home Server. If it's some other version of Windows, you'll want plain old SageTV for Windows.
If you have any PC clients -- i.e. secondary computers running SageTV Client software -- you'll need to upgrade that as well. That's what the "don't mix versions" thing is about. Your HD200 is a client, but not a captial-C Client in that sense. You will want to update it to the latest beta firmware however.

Thanks
Thanks Greg. I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Took awhile for the HD200 to recognize the extender server, but everything seems to be working OK. I noticed that I get a socket error when trying to play TV show episodes on Netflix using the PlayOn plugin, but I gather this is a known problem. Version 7 seems a big improvement, especially since it's designed specifically to run on Windows 7.

Mixed clients?
WAF is a big issue in my house. (As is probably true of MANY others)
Is it possible to load Version 7 on my server and one client while continuing to run 6.x on the other clients? (All are PC's)

I believe you can continue to use the V6 STV if that is what you are asking. The client machines don't even need a new license. But the server will obviously be running V7, so any potential bugs could still be a problem.

You will have to run the v7 client on all connected devices. However, as mentioned, you can continue to use the same user interface (Called SageTV3) on a version 7 client. This will keep the interface the same, but utilize all the back-end improvement that came with v7.

fuzzy, are you saying that I can use my heavily-modded 6.6 interface as it is now under the 7 clients while running 7 on clients and WHS?

In most cases, I believe that would work (depends on your mods, though). That said, I'm not positive that the SageTV3 STV shipping with SageTV7 is exactly the same as from 6.6, so there MIGHT be a problem or two in there.

You can load any STV you like on any client, just as you could in V6. That hasn't changed.
