Should I upgrade my SageTV server from XP to Vista?

As my son is a student he gets a good deal on Vista upgrade.

Should I upgrade our home PC which is also the SageTV server from Windows XP to Vista?

Or will it screw the pooch?

Michael

If it's a dedicated box (server only), then I wouldn't. If it's a multi-use PC, then you may consider it, but you may run into issues (with hardware, mostly).

If it ain't broke, don't fix it IMHO.

Besides, at this point, I'd be tempted to skip Vista alltogether and go directly to Windows7 if you really wanted to upgrade.

I know here in the States, anyone with an .edu email can get Windows7 for $29.99 till sometime in January. You might check to see if there is a similar program going on in the UK.

Here is a link to the thread on slickdeals that discusses the deal.

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthr...9043&t=1562761

According to the terms of the deal, you need to be a currently enrolled student with a valid .edu address - but read the thread.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm pretty sure you can get a full version out of it. I believe you have to choose between versions (but why anyone would pick the upgrade version is beyond me).

I just used my wife's email to get the link and it keeps saying it's for the upgrade version.
But, according to that link a few posts back, if you call microsoft they will send out a full version for $30. Just have your school email ready. I'll have to try that route out later.

--------2) Call Microsoft's Store directly at 1.877.696.7786 which gets you a mailed DVD for $34.99 + local tax (believed to be retail box)

The BEST way to obtain the software is to call Microsoft at the number above. You can have the FULL Version of either Pro or Home shipped to you with DVD for $34.98 + local tax!!
We shall see!

I thought I would confirm. I just got off the phone with the Microsoft store. I was on hold for about 25 minutes but I did get my order placed.

It cost $29.99 + tax and shipping. Everything went the way it was supposed to. Plus, the trance music was entertaining.

Just figured I would share for anyone interested in doing the same.

Yes, I did. I double checked and they even sent a confirmation email. I still find it hard to believe for some reason. $300 software for $40 tax and shipping? Student discount goes a long ways.

I saw that too. Going to check when the store opens on Monday and post what they tell me.

Yes, that is what I ordered. There is no price difference between the Home and Pro. I asked the agent about it and she just told me I would be dumb to order the Home. Once again, I got the full Pro version.

How many products can I purchase?
Eligible students are allowed to purchase one copy of either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional from the online store.

getting back on the original question, when I upgraded from XP to Vista a long standing problem of windows reporting that it was out of virtual memory after running for a couple of weeks went away with it. Not to mention the EVR benefits if you actually play video from the server. I know what I'm about to say is controversial, but I'm going to say that at least for the HTPC market sticking with Vista is probably preferred due to the media foundation changes in 7. Yes you can work around a lot of the issues, but it may not be desirable to do all the work to do it correctly for some people. And by correctly, I mean making sure that the foundation codecs can be used by programs that needs them, like remote desktop, or windows media player.
