Anyone running an i7?

I am thinking about upgrading to an i7 chip to see if I get a boost in my fps on comskip scanning of H264 files.
  • Does anyone have one of these chips and use comskip for commercial detection?
  • Would you mind sharing your FPS?

FTR - I am at about 18.5 FPS on a Q6600.

Thanks,

B

It's a bit of overkill IMHO. I am running the SageTV with an Intel Quad Core @ 2.4GHz, 4GB CORSAIR DDR2 800 running w/ (2) HD-PVRs and the CPU barely gets stressed. (I bought this before I really knew anything about SageTV)

I easily could of gotten away with a dual-core system and would of been fine. The only reason I would suggest upgrading something as powerful as that is for what you are wanting is to process more with comskip and then I would still look at something cheaper / less power hungry. I can't do real time commercial processing with the quad-core it still takes ~ 45 mins for every 30 mins of show from the HD-PVR. I am getting ~ 20.9 to 23.76 fps processing speed with the quad core.

I hope this helps!

I would be interested in tweaking the system down the road to compress TV shows after marking commercials. I am most interested in pushing the FPS as close to real time as possible on the HDPVR.

I know it is not an intel but you might want to take a look at the AMD line... I just upgrade to an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz (OC to 3.6) yesterday from an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ @ 3Ghz. I can assure you i ran comskip on a 1.5gig recorded file and it took about 1min compared to about 10-20mins I also did another test converting DVD's to mkv. In the past it takes about 3hr convert to MKV now about 25mins
I have been throwing all sorts of stuff at the cpu it can't even peg it

Do you have an HDPVR?

My HD-PVR recordings are taking on average 5 minutes to detect after the recording is done. The longest is about 25 minutes. This is for a one hour show. I'm using SAV1. I've spent some significant time tweaking it, but it is now about 98% accurate. When it does miss, it is always saying that a commercial is show. I haven't decided to remove commercials from the files themselves, but with accuracy like that I'm tempted.

Using Handbrake I get very close to realtime (~58 FPS) converting my HDPVR recordings with an Intel Q9550. With the built-in transcoder it's maybe 1.5x realtime.

IIRC my 1080i HD PVR recordings comskip at about 25 fps on my i7 920, though a decent amount of that might be disc limited. Of course the other thing that just occurs to me is that that's probably not right. I've got Dirmon set to start comskip/SA basically as soon as a recording starts, so 99% of the time comskip is just sitting there running in real time, right behind the recording, so that's holding it back. Guess I don't even remember what I actually see for recording speed.

Of course I can run 2 HD PVR recordings and a couple OTA recordings all at the same time without even making it out.

-edit

Just deleted a comskip file to force a new detection. 1080i HD PVR recording, it's looking like right about 35fps at about 75% CPU usage on one core/thread.
Meanwhile Showanalyzer will do a 1080i MPEG-2 recording at about 250 fps, maybe a bit more.

And these are being scanned of a network drive (my i7 machine isn't my Sage server).

He's not really talking about a 100% increase. Notice he's comparing an HD-PVR for comskip with MPEG2 for SA. It would be better to compare the same format.

His 35fps is ~100% better than my 18fps.

Well in that case, never mind. My mistake.
