Hi all,
I've been through this forum for the past week looking for ways to get my linux rig up and running. After I got it running I thought I'd put up a consolidated guide. So here is how I got my server running:
- Start with the default install
- after the second reboot when SageTV configuration is supposed to start you get a 'cannot start display""' error
- That's OK, hit CTRL-C to get a bash prompt
- At the prompt type 'emerge --sync'
- When that's done type 'emerge gentoo-sources'
- then 'emerge kde'
- then copy laurenglenn's 3 start up files (Thanks laurenglenn!!!!) into your ~ directory
- these files can be d/l'ed from http://forums.freytechnologies.com/f...2&d=1137468691
- then edit your .bash_profile file by typing 'nano .bash_profile'
- then edit that flie the way laurenglenn did, here's the info: http://forums.freytechnologies.com/f...0&postcount=16
- then reboot the computer by tying 'reboot'
- after Gentoo loads you get a choice to go into SageTV or KDE. Go into SageTV and finish the configuration of capture sources, TV listings, etc
- and now your done!
I use my server to serve a MVP in my living room over Ethernet. I don't need to multitask so I don't need to boot into KDE to start SageTV but I like the flexibility.
Interesting note. by default your linux box has Samba turned and shares out 4 directories, TV, Videos, Music, and Pictures. You watch captured TV on your windows PC and drag-n-drop files onto the SageTV server.
SageTV server specs: 1 GHz Pentium III, 256 RAM, 40 GB HD (to be upgraded), hauppauge PVR 500, on direct Comcast feed (no cable box).
To be tested: pictures, multiple MVP's, and music.
Hope this helps. Enjoy!
