So long, and thanks for all the fish

The day has arrived in our house - no more sage clients on TV's.

I landed on TiVo as the replacement for now - at least on the DVR side of things. For online and ripped content I'm using a combination of Netflix / Amazon Prime / PLEX. I think my STB of choice for that stuff is the Amazon Fire TV.

Maybe Google's Android TV will be something cool to find the potential that SageTV could have had - I'll be keeping an eye on that for sure. But for now I bid a fond farewell to the world of SageTV - it was a wild ride there for a while!

I'm down to just a single HD300 - it'll end up on the for sale thread soon.

btl.

The interesting thing about TiVo is the switch from Adobe to Haxe and the possibilities it could bring.

Thanks bialo. Good luck in the future. When my Sage gives up the ghost I will probably go TiVo as well. The FireTV looks promising but I've held off on it for now.

Hope you'll stop by the forums every once in a while, for old time's sake. Regardless, thanks for everything you've done. I think it'll be a long time before I give up on Sage, so your work will definitely continue being utilized for years to come.

bialio - check out:

http://www.tablotv.com/blog/tablo-pl...-lotta-awesome

Myself and another TabloTV user put together a Plex Channel which is officiallly in the channel store. IT brings LiveTV, Recorded TV, and Upcoming Recordings View to any plex connected client!

cool stuff.

I am looking at the Tablo and Tivo as well. The problem with Tablo in my opinion is that by the time you buy the lifetime subscription and hard drive for the Tablo, for only ~$50 more you can buy the Tivo which also supports Cable Card if you need it in the future.

No, $600 for the Tivo including Lifetime sub and ~$550 for Tablo (4-tuner+sub+hard drive).

ok but thats stil for 1 device. you wanna add on other tivo clients you have to pay for hardware and then either lifetime subs on those devices, or monthly fees.

tivo website is 699.98 for a roamio with lifetime premier (OTA MODEL!) and has a 500GB HDD

the price you mentioned for the Tablo would include a 2 TB hdd... not really apples to apples comparison IMO.

The OTA model also has Cable Card and if you buy it from somewhere other than Tivo directly there is a coupon to get $100 off sub (e.g. from Amazon it would currently cost you $580 total). You can watch from the main unit to offset the costs of the clients. I guess my point is the cost is close enough that one might consider going with the proven Tivo.

I see what youre saying. I don't necessarily agree though. the cost of the base unit is sorta close in price, but not apples to apples. Tablo however has a client list (free apps and most of us have STB streamers in our house i.e. roku) that tivo can't even touch (without additional hardware like the tivo stream)

Tablo clients:
- Roku
- Chromecast (via Android)
- Apple TV (via airplay)
- Web UI
- IOS Tablet App
- Android Tablet App
- Plex Channel Plugin (Live TV, Recordings, and see upcoming scheduled)
- ALL plex clients (FireTV, Roku, IOS, android, samsung tv, lg tv, upnp, dlna, etc.)

Tivo Clients:
- Tivo Mini ($99 plus service)
- Tivo Stream (for remote viewing - 149.99)
- thats it AFAIK

So yeah, I see where you are coming from on the initial investment being close, but its not really the same in anway IMO. You get a lot more for your "initial investment" with Tablo. Not in anyway trying to argue or say you are wrong or whatever, just mentioning the above because i don't think the initial comparison of investments is accurate.

What do you use know? Tivo or you still rockin' SageTV ?

I have been using WMC with XBox 360 as an extender which works fine (other than it being a power hog and space heater). But I am always researching all potential alternatives including the Tablo which has a lot going for it.
