clients and codec pack trouble?

I'm in the middle of building my first client pc, I read on an older thread that loading something like a klite codec pack can be a mess.

I installed the mega codec pack before I read this.... Should I just stop, start over with a fresh win7 install before I get to far into this?

All you need are the LAV Filters no need for codec packs.

But did you Install the ones from the developers Site not the ones that come with a codec pack?

toony,

Can you give us an update on your progress...I'm about to do a similar upgrade and it has been years since I set up a client...my systems don't work great, so if it is working for you I'd like to hear about it...especially the codec piece and the settings you use in the SageTV SW for EVR etc.

thanks,

mv

I could use some advice too. I did a reload to Windows 7 a while ago, but my machine cratered (Going since 2006!) and now I'm reloading on a new machine. Same video card, hard drives...

But the codecs... <gazes off into space, and whispers> the codecs....

Faster machine, trying to use EVR, but everything is SOOOO slow... I fast forward, and have to wait for it to spool before it jumps 10 seconds. Then again to spool before it jumps 10 seconds.

I've got them looking sharp and clear, but...

I for the life of me, have never been able to find one set of filters that could play every container of every format and codec on a Windows client. There is always something, an MKV, TS or MP4 recorded in some fashion that won't play and I have to switch to the SageTVPlayer or change the audio decoder. Often the demux part of the chain is the issue.

Drives me nuts because it was working, then my old machine failed.

I'm using LAV, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I used to use Overlay for best performance, but now Overlay isn't working.

Yep. Once the security essentials thing runs it slows things down.

I've done more with codecs than I care to admin.

I've only ever run client PC's with sage.

.mkv's have issues with the built in sage splitter. Nothing you can do about it.
Some work, some don't.
I convert everything to either .ts or .m2ts and those work properly

LAV decoders don't work well with sage.
I use either the arcsoft decoders or the built in MS decoders for h.264 work best for AMD hardware and intel hardware. No experience with nvidia for video playback (gaming yes)

Mpeg 2 for tv is generally cyberlink v8 decoder. It works well.

Codec packs are the enemy. Use them and you will have issues. Bare minimum is best.

I have no problem with LAV filters in Sage at all. I even disabled the Sage splitter so that it uses the LAV spliter for MKV's. It is just a matter how you configure them.

Ive had good luck with Andy's (babgavant) Antipack codec pack. link

It does allow for a minimal install without taking over your pc. Of course, like everything else about codecs, everyone's experience might be different.

It's because you disabled the sage splitter.
The only issue I've ever had with LAV is the audio decoder doesn't lock on as quick on my receiver.

That is one of the reasons I said it depends on your config, or I should have.

That is one pack I would use. I did, but I don't know how often he updates it.

So when people use the LAV decoders, do you have to set it in the setup? I thought I'd read that just installing it was enough, but I'm not sure it is doing anything.

I've tried using the LAV audio and LAV video decoders, but they haven't been fabulous. Nothing performs as well as my old machine using overlay. I'm seeing a bit of improvement with the Microsoft decoder for video, and LAV audio, but still not as good as it was. The ac3 decoder is ok, but doesn't sound as good.

You have to setup the Video to use Hardware Acceleration if available on your system.
