OpenSource sagedct?

Andy,

First I want to thank you for all you have done for the sage community with your knowledge and utilities. You pretty much kept sage alive for me and many others with providing a way for us to use our cablecard devices. So again thank you.

I wanted to ask you about thoughts on open sourcing sage dct for the community. I know you are spending less and less time on the project so I know it would be a valuable asset for our little sage family. This will allow the savvy to possibly add in new enhancements, encourage others to learn, and possibly help train more folks to support it. I worry that without any succession then the utility will just die.(especially after you have moved on, hopefully by choice) As we all know no software is 100% bug free, there will be a day when the right scenario hits and the community encounter a bug, or some new limitation and it would be great for all to have access to the code to Implement fixes.

As we have seen with you all it takes is one person to make a difference and if it's open source one individual now has a foundation to work of. It will encourage innovation.

Anyways that's my thought. I'm sure there might be a few opinions on this but I encourage the community to sound off here if they wish.

I, too, share this dream. However, I suspect the biggest deterrent is the lack of a replacement for the HD200/HD300 devices. When our current device(s) dies of old age (or whatever) the market (price of used) will force us to find an alternative to SageTV regardless of how up-to-date it is... it already has in many cases.

In any event, I don't know what I will do when this joy ride is over. (This is a recurrent nightmare keeping awake nights.)

the new very small form factor PCs (think Intel NUC, nano itx based solutins...) have made it easy and cost effective to replace an HD300. In fact the full sagetv client is more feature full. SageTV has many many years ahead...

Agreed. The only rub is client licenses, but those are at least tradeable at this point. Though I don't see how this has anything to do with SageDCT...
