Confused about importing

Hi there,

I am trying to use the export/import tools in Gemstone. I have exported a flow and want to import it. But when I look at the 'import settings' the only file I see available is 'ConvertedADMMenus.prop...'. How do I find the file that I exported?

Also, eventually I just want to export everything that is Gemstone related and then import it all on my other extenders. What are the 'general settings' under export? Are those base Sage settings or Gemstone settings?

Sorry if this is all explained somewhere, I have not been able to find any info by searching =/

Thanks
Les

In the Eport menu select "Select All Exports" and then select "Export". you can also change the name of the file if you pick the generated name prior to selecting Export. This will export ALL settings related to Gemstone.

This will create a file something like "20121022-1707-ALL.properties" with the year month day time at the begining. The file is created in the Sage TV folder under

userdata\Gemstone

You may need to copy that file to the server or another client if you want to use the file as an import on another system.

You can also select any/all of the following to export....

- A single Flow (only available if you select export from a Flow)
- All Flows
- General Settings (all gemstone settings other than flow, menu, widgets)
- Menus
- Widgets

The Import function will open a File Type dialog to select the import file. It defaults to the same location as above but you should also be able to navigate to other locations.

Note:in a future version we may enhance the export and import to select network locations as well.

Hope that helps.

Hi jusjoken,

The problem I was having was related to exporting/importing just a single view. I was in my movies view. I hit options and chose export view. Then tried to import it elsewhere, but there was no file to be found.

Then I did it your way from the main menu. I exported everything and was able to get it to work.

Thank you
Les

If you exported a single flow and then tried importing it on the same client and it was not listed then that is a bug. If you tried the import from another client then likely it needed copying to the new location.

As of the next version "1.0175" all import/exports will be stored/retrieved from the Server by default with the option on PC Clients to use the local file system if desired.

This is what I tried. But, an extender not a pc client. I exported a single flow on an extender and then tried to import that same flow on the same extender as a copy to then modify.

However, it was not a big deal. I just remade the flow a second time and all was fine. It's not like we have to do this very often

Thanks
Les

As a "copy" is not possible. If you reimport an exported Flow and the flow still exists then the imported one will overwrite the existing one... not make a second "copy" of the flow.

Is that what you were trying to do? If so, we may make this an option in the future but it's not possible right now.

Yeah, that is exactly what I was trying to do. So, it makes sense why it didn't work

I don't know how important of a feature it would be. Like I said, I imagine most people just make their flows once and then are done.

Thank you again

Conversely (and I know the gemstone team don't want to think about text editors), what you CAN likely do is export your flow, modify it in the file (even if you are just changing the name) and reimport it. Then, it won't overwrite the original, as it is now a 'different flow'... maybe.. don't know, never tried it...
