personalizing Sage directories

do folks here create custom dirs for things like edited recordings, DVD rips, video from various places (for example, a directory for episodes of one show)....

do you create them in windows explorer, or another app? Is there a good or bad way to organize files?

reason I ask is that my recordings and video data is increasing, and scrolling seems, well...stupid?

I have a folder structure that I use to semi-organize my non-recorded movies. Manually set it up & maintain it though.

For imported videos, I have a folder structure - it works well but isn't very sophisticated.

I keep them all on a NAS box. They are imported media for SageTV. The structure is:
  • Action
  • Children's
  • Comedy
  • Documentaries
  • Drama
  • Horror
  • TV

The TV subdir contains both ripped TV shows AND TV shows that used to be in recordings but after a 2009 main board failure (bad caps) and no backed up wiz.bin, they now show up as imported videos and I've just moved them into the TV subdir I created (mostly some recorded sporting events I want to hang onto). Within each category above I have a subdir for each movie (probably overkill) and within each subdir I have both the ripped movie or imported TV show and a .jpg with the same title.

For example,

Video Import Directory
-Children's subdir
--The Incredibles subdir
---The Incredibles.mp4 file
---The Incredibles.jpg file

I use the folder view rather than titles, DVD/BD, or category views. It follows the file structure on the NAS box and is easy for the kids to navigate in SageTV. Like I said, nothing fancy but works and is intuitive.

I'm probably one of the few on these boards that actually uses SageTV in it's default functionality to listen to music and I use the folder views for my .mp3 collection too. A subdir for each artist and embedded subdir's for each CD release containing the .mp3 songs and .jpg art work. I have some .mp3 play lists - created in SageTV - that I listen too pretty regularly. SageTV recognizes metadata tags but I prefer the folder views.

That .jpg file in each movie folder... I've been looking for a way to get box art to display in v6 for my .mkv movies. I use folder.jpg for the DVD/BD movies, but didn't know if I could use a JPG named the same as the video to display the box art instead. Most of my MKV videos are in a /movies folder, but not in their own directories. Can't tell much from the frame Sage displays after scanning a few sec of the file.
