Can't get ripped dvd movies to play

I am testing windows 8 preview . I can play MKV files, but dvd movies ripped to a hard drive throws a can't render video. I have tried the microsoft decoder and the intervideo which worked great with xp. Is there something I am missing? I have tried overlay, EVR, basically every option. How are you folks getting it to work with windows 7 which should be about the same.

Windows 8 does NOT come with DVD palyback. You either have to install the optional Media Center component or install a paid for DVD software player like Cyberlink.
