I ripped a few movies and the vob playback is less than desirable

I tried to playback the .vob only no folder with all the other stuff
used smart ripper and the files playing smoothness is fine
but the files are timed incorrectly
I was watching last samuari and the movie only plays half way through
then if I rewind a little I see the credits
rewind even more and I find part of the movie that I never saw yet

I could never find the instant where the movie split because if you went back too far it would end up at the near the beginning of the movie
I just could never find the break

I went ahead and played it back in WinDVD which can apparently playback .vob files correctly

did I do something wrong by just adding the .vob file into SageTV video library?

Went I ripped the movie I did it as one large file but I can do it again as chapter or whatever and save the other files if it helps

just use to WinDVD's behavior

does sage have the ability to correctly playback ripped DVDs?

I have used dvdshrink to rip a few dvd's inthe last few days. They play flawlessly. As a matter of fact, I think this is how I am going to replace my Divx rips. With dirve space being so cheap, I cannot justifythe quality loss anymore.

huh the movie I did rip was almost 8 GB one disk could have this contributed to the problem
do you just add the single vob file into the library or do you have a folder with the info and stuff
it still seems strange that it plays fine with WinDVD but not in sage

With DVDshrink, the largest, with full menus and extra features that I have done was about 5 gigs. I did We were soliders as only the main move and it came out to be 2.5 gigs. And no, they are not single files. they are the full DVD VOb/ifo structure.

I have found that the VOB files must be in a folder called VIDEO_TS, don't know if capitalization is needed, but I have tried to put the VOB files in a folder named <movie> and it does not work, it must be <movie>/VIDEO_TS and then is will work . . . . sometimes.

I also found that VOBs ripped with DVD Decryptor did not work, but those ripped with DVD Shrink do.

YMMV.

DVD shrink does NOT use deCSS (correctly). You should rip with dvd decrypter first, and then run it through DVD shrink.

All DVD decrypter does is remove CSS and copy it to your hard drive. It should work fine.

VOB only rips tend to be problematic in just about any app, especially if you rip to a single VOB. However if you use DVD shrink and rip to a "Moviename" folder and have the "Create VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS Folders" option selected it should work just fine, I have yet to have a problem with that method.

lovingHDTV, thats correct. Sage needs them to have the same file structure as a dvd.

TunaBoo,
I have not had DVD Decryptor work for me. I do have DVD Shrink remove DeCSS but honestly I have never tried to play it with anything but the Sonic decoder pack. Maybe I'll give it a shot with the Elecard and see if DeCSS was correctly removed.

Stranger89,
Yes, I agree, the only way I have had ripped DVDs play correctly within Sage, is to rip exactly as you state. That way has always worked for me. I do tell DVD Shrink to remove DeCSS, and not to compress or split files.

well with smart ripper you have the option to rip as one big file with info adn stuff files
rip as an increment sized files
rip as chapters splits
rip as the movie splits it on the DVD
I thought if I just added .vob to the sage property file and added it
it would playback the .vobs
and it does but not correctly
yet WinDVD does huh?
so I need to basically just put in the file in a folder called Video_TS
then add it back to the media library
and sage will play it correctly
last samuari just the movie with 6 channel english is 6.37 GB not 8 sorry
and kill bill is 4.96 same as above
I will try to add it like this and see if it does better
apparently Sage just does not support playback of .vob files

smart ripper comes with products from DVD X Copy (321 Studios)

smart ripper is freeware that has been available a long time. I used it when I converted my dvd collection to divx. It works very well but dvdshrink(also freeware) is better.
