Remote Control -- Sage vs. iTunes

I am running Sage on my HTPC as my primary client. I have a standard Microsoft USB IR and use a programmable remote to drive sage. All of this is/was working beautifully....until I had to install iTunes to provide content to my ATV. I do not look, use, or like iTunes, but it is required for local media. Once iTunes was installed and open, my remote control can no longer stop and pause Sage. It appears those commands are going to iTunes instead.

Is there a simple way to correct this? My HTPC is my file server, media server, and Sage Server/Client.

Get a USB-UIRT, and direct your remote commands as you want through eventghost or girder.

Is this pretty much my only option? I think I would prefer to eliminate iTunes before I have to buy something else and re-do everything on my system. The ATV is neato, but not that neato. I absolutely despise iTunes because of how intrusive it can be. On my laptop, one of the services pegs out one of my CPU cores for some reason. I have to manually disable the mobile device service each time it updates. I can't stand that it installs Bonjour and the other random services that I have no use for. This behavior reminds me of RealPlayer since it installs other junk and usually ends up messing with other associations in Windows.

Anyone have any other suggestions? The ATV is my only Apple device within my household.

Do you know exactly why the play/pause aren't working now? Is it an issue of remote codes or is iTunes intercepting these commands?

If it is the former then you can teach SageIR codes. Perhaps you can reprogram your remote to send different signals for Play and Pause and then teach these to Sage. But I am guessing that is not the problem.

Try to reconfigure SageTV, maybe it can steal back the control of the USB IR receiver...

The problem with the MCE style receivers, is they are HID devices, meaning the effectively function as Keyboards. The media transport keys are just special purpose keys, that really any program can hook in to, and there's no way to prevent it from happening. This is why the USB-UIRT solution is so much better for a multi-software system.

I hate to have to purchase something else for my Sage system knowing it is a doomed system since I can't ever expand it.

I guess I will either have to fully remap all of the keys/functions or buy a USB-UIRT. Or just remove iTunes and all issues are resolved.
