Update issues
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
I tried to update my hd200's firmware to the latest version today, and when I came back downstairs all I had was a black screen. I gave it awhile, but it never became responsive. Restarting it would not even allow me to get into standalone mode in order to do the usb recovery. I recovered it using server method, but that firmware is too old to suport version 7. Now I am trying to get back to version 20100518-1 (last version that worked for me). I have read the "FAQ's" and it says to download the bin and ver file to a usb drive.....the ver file is just text, what am I supposed to do with it? The firmware instructions also say to rename the files acording to the "FAQ's".......it says nothing about renaming anything as far as I can see. I have tried naming the bin file with what is contained in the ver file......no success. I have an angery family waiting around the tv right now, please save me....lol.

To save the ver file in Mozilla right click and choose "Save Link As...", in IE right click and choose "Save Target As...".
DL the version you want from the announcement thread, rename both ver and bin to stp200.ver and stp200.bin respectively, (ie stp200-20100518-1.ver > stp200.ver), just make sure they are both the same version. I DL mine to a folder on the desktop first then right click and "Send To" the USB drive and remove any old firmware files and rename once they are on the USB

Alright, thanks for the response, i'll give it a go. I was expecting the .ver file to be a text file.

It is a text file, it's just that (by default?) the browser downloads and displays instead of downloading and storing the file. You force a download and store by right clicking and saving.
I think the ver file is used by the HD200 to verify that the firmware (the bin file) was received intact. I think the first 32 characters may be some sort of cryptographic hash (MD5 maybe???), but that is just guessing. Good Luck! I had to go back to an old version with the latest salvo of firmwares, the 7/19 version seems to be a keeper for me.

Interesting. What kind of issues did you have with the newer firmwares? I'm interested in some of the updates cantained in the new software. I'm wondering if the problem might be because I didn't revert to the default stv before I updated to the latest beta server software, and then the latest beta firmware.

wow, there is something really wrong with that 7/19 firmware. I just tried updating to it again, this time by putting it on a thumb drive. When it finishes and restarts, it just goes to black screen and is completly unresponsive. I can't get into standalone mode, pushing buttons on the remote doesn't make any lights blink ont the front, nothing. I have to recover using the server method, and then upgrade to the last working firmware via the usb recovery method. I think I am gonna try the server recovery method using the last .bin file that worked for me, and see if I can cut down on the recovery steps. If nothing else, I am getting an education in recoverying these things..lol (I have never had an issue with updates before).

Some of the newer firmware including the one from 7/19/10 can cause issues with it syncing with your TV. For example 1080i output will no longer sync with my TV so I'm stuck using 720p for the time being. Try pressing the video out button on the remote to cycle through the different output resolutions until you find one that will work.
I submitted a bug report and was told that they believe the problem has been fixed for the next firmware release. |

Thats what I was thinking at first, but there is no response on the box when you push ANY buttons on the remote (the lights on the box stay solid).

I restored using the server procedure once - but I think later the reset procedure allowed the HD200 to start and from then on I used the USB procedure, but updated to 7/19 auto method. For me server was slowest method so I prefer USB. What happens if you reset before you update the firmware?
