Problem Playing Two Ripped DVD's at Same Time
I have a Thecus N5200 with three 1TB drives in raid 5. I rip DVD's to it recreating the DVD structure there (i.e., with VIDEO_TS folder).
Last night the family was watching one DVD on one computer and another DVD on another computer, both using SageTV and both pulling the content from the Thecus. Both video streams paused and resumed (stuttered) occasionally. Looks to me to be a read speed issue. Two questions: 1. Anyone have any suggestions for improving this situation? 2. Am I going to have a problem pulling two HD streams from the Thecus when I upgrade the system to HD? TIA - Jeff |

It's either a drive bottleneck or a network bottleneck. Make sure you hvae gigabit network connections all the way around. Verify they have all connected at 1000mb-full duplex. Make sure no other apps or processes run on your NAS besides what is required to share the drive.
If you're having a problem streaming 2 DVDs then yes-you will have issues with HD. Gerry

Gerry, thanks for the info. What's the best way to test drive i/o vs. network bandwidth?

Without testing anything, it looks like the RAID server is going to be the bottleneck.
Is anyone running a raid'ed nas server pulling multiple DVD/HD streams? - Jeff |

Nothing to add other than I just tried simultaneous DVD watching and it was fine. I use a low spec (Athlon X2 4200/1 Gig RAM/7200rpm Drives) WHS box and GigE. The WHS isn't even 64K clustered.
