Stupid Question RE: HD PVR

This might seem dumb, but I cannot find a ref to this specifically anywhere I've looked:

Sage TV supports the HD PVR from Hauppauge. Every discussion revolves around recording/playback: is it possible to view real-time HD input from this box using Sage (and thus the various configuration settings of sage filters and whatnot)?

I need a way to scale real time incoming HD camera signal via a computer for projection: and this solution seems great-- just can't seem to figure out if it actually is able to do that!

The HD PVR works just like any other tuner in Sage, so you can view the incoming stream "live" on the computer.

To be 100% accurate Sage doesn't technically show the image live. There will be a slight delay since the signal is being recorded and played back at the same time. So the image you see could be a few seconds behind the live image.

The base software may work better for you as technically your graphics card will re-scale the image to suit it's output regardless.

So, what exactly are you trying to do? Does it need to be PC based? The sad fact is that there just aren't really any passthrough/viewing-focused HD PC video devices.

Depends what you mean by "real-time". So the HD-PVR has component input. If your HD camera has component output then you could theoretically connect the camera to the HD-PVR. Now you could probably use either Sage or the Total Media Extreme application that comes with the HD-PVR and by connecting your video card that is in your PC to your projector then you could see what the camera and the HD-PVR is capturing. In Sage though everything is recorded to the hard drive so there will be some delay compared to actual "real-time". So that may be acceptable in what you are trying to do. With the Total Media Extreme application I'm not sure but I believe you could see it as a pass through or you could press the capture button to record it to the hard drive in a .ts file format or avchd. I haven't done this so it is all theoretical and just thinking out loud.

But with either app it's compressed to H.264, which has to be decoded by the PC.

Correct. That's why I refer to it as "real-time". (In quotes) Since it is done in hardware it may only be delayed 1 or 2 seconds. It is up to the OP to decide if that is something he can live with. By the same token I have broguht up TME with the HD-PVR connected to the setbox and while watching and changing between stations on the STB it was good enough to consider it "real-time". (This was not using the capture buttom in the TME app, just watching the stream.)
