stupid question....

I just put WHS on my sage/cqc server last weekend... (what a PITA)...

and I just installed the normal sageTV server software I was running before not the fancy new WHS version... it seems to be working just fine...
should I uninstall that and use the WHS Sage?? is it any better? am I missing any sage goodness by not using the WHS Sage?

You're not missing Sage features but you are missing the WHS console add-in for service control. I would uninstall the old version and install the add-in from the console.

well, I really am not using the WHS features as such, I just wanted a cheap version of Win server 2k3... not a big fan of their silly drive pooling setup...
does sage WHS lock you into using the drive pool like the MyMovies WHS does?

WHS is not a "cheap version of win2k3" it has things win2k3 SBS doesn't have and it doesn't have things that win2k3 SBS does have. Doing some things that win2k3 can will not only violate the WHS EULA it will break the OS too.

That said, you're not *required* to use the drive pool but it'd be silly not to since that's one of it's good features.

EDIT:
Actually that's not entirely true; You are required to use the drive pool with the D partition, that's part of the WHS install with the default shares. You don't have to put *additional* drives in the pool, but it's your loss...

If you want to use the free Placeshifter license in the WHS version of Sage you need to install the console version. That, and being able to install/unistall from the WHS console are the only real advantages I know of.

And no, it doesn't lock you to the drive pool. I use it with separate drives that are outside the pool. And if you want to use DNS, DHCP, or some of the other minor services they are all there if you know how to add them.

You should look at the client backup software included in WHS, it's outstanding. That's the only reason I use it over Server 2008.
