Sagetv and Vista

What do you need to disable in Vista to successfully run SageTV in Vista.

the entire partition and install XP

really it all depends on what role the vista machine will be doing. If its just stand alone Sagetv and nothing else.

Disable the following

1. UAC
2. IPv6
3. Remote Differential compression
4. and anything else service wise that your not going to use.

Must have

1.sp1
2. Java 1.6

And I'm sure there is more but my brain is fried and I'm sure someone else well chime in here soon enough.

*Need* to disable"? Probably just VMC if you choose Ultimate. GPEdit.msc is good for that. On Business in addition to the above post, I did Defender and the Defrag as well. BTW, I love Vista Business for HTPC, just install SP1 and Google "NetworkThrottlingIndex"...set it to 70-80%. No more network speed related problems

Instead of turning off UAC, download TweakUAC (www.tweakuac.com) and set it to quiet mode.

Still have protected mode yet none of the hassles.

Suggest Vista Biz as well.

If this is going to be a stand-alone SageTV machine that won't be used for anything else I would suggest disabling UAC. But if this is going to be a multi-purpose computer with SageTV running in the background keeping UAC enabled would be highly recommended.

Actually, probably the most important thing that needs to be disabled for sure is the superfetch service; especially if you have more than one tuner recording to the same hard disk... otherwise, youll get heavily stuttered video, even on very fast sata disks with quadcore CPU.

Please be careful with how you disable superfetch if you choose to do so. The default way you see posted all over the place kills all prefetch. You want it at least to the level of how it was in XP to do that use the following registry key (copy to a text doc, rename it to .reg)

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters]
"EnableSuperfetch"=dword:00000000
"EnablePrefetcher"=dword:00000003
Also, personally UAC doesn't bother me, once I have everything installed. I rarely see it now, but again its your choice to remove it.
