SageTV and Windows Vista???

Just wondering what will eventually happen when Windows Vista hits the market in 2006 (per microsoft.com)... Will Frey be ready with a new version for the 64 bit version of windows? I for one am interested because I have a 64 bit system running stupid XP (just itching to upgrade to a 64 bit OS. I just hope for once Microsoft has a head on their shoulders with this one.... I hate downloading a bunch of updates just to fix the XP issues when rebuilding my computers.

Frankly, I see absolutely NO reason to get excited about Longhorn/Vista.

You will have 64-bit support in XP once there is decent 64-bit driver support in the more common hardware. That is all we need, IMHO.

Longhorn/Vista seems to be an interesting case where you pay more, for less functionality (regarding DRM, which will likely be mandatory in that OS)

To the OP: Are you running XP, or XP64? XP64 has been out for a couple months now, and depending on your XP license, you could for a while get a free upgrade to XP64 from Microsoft...

Still doesn't address the Sage64 question, but then you'd be running a 64-bit OS, without the DRM & other requirements of Vista (one of which may be the requirement to have a digital monitor for DRM purposes, NO analog support, or limited resolution if you're using analog instead of DVI/Digital).

I for one will leave my Sage machines with XP, unless they come out with a 64 compatible version, then I'll use XP64. It's a fairly well-known beast, and I won't have to be on the bleeding edge OS-wise just to watch some TV .

Cool now all that's needed are 64 bit drivers for tuner cards in xp64.

As far as i know hauppauge hasn't come out with any yet and im not sure about avermedia or the others but when i was in the rc tests nobody had a working driver for their tuner cards and hauppauge was saying they wouldn't release any drivers till xp64 was finalized. Since then they have removed that link on their support page and have no links to any further information about 64 bit drivers beta or not for xp64.

As far as vista is concerned im with the others on that, Why put your sage box on an OS that is so heavily DRM'ed and restrictive as Vista is going to be?

It will just make things worse not better esspecially with all the extra added resource hogging features in vista, but then thats just my opinion.

So i just don't see any advantage to vista not at this time anyway.

Why go 64-bit and release it now when there is no real need for it? We are at the stage in Windows 95B's time when Fat32 was an option but wasn't recommended because most utilities didn't support it. The Video drivers are getting better but are still alittle bit rough, I dont know of any 64-bit tuner drivers, and theres not a ton of audio drivers out that are polished either. I got a copy of x64 windows that I had sitting in the drive ready for the reboot until I sat there and thought about it. I Personally believe that 64-bit wont be a force until Vista then and even then just as bragging rights.

Well I haven't taken the time to read all the stuff about Vista and its DRM crap. I wouldn't put Vista on my Sage box either knowing that one thing...

BTW I just realized that I should have been asking if the 64 bit windows or Vista would be worth upgrading to on an office computer, not a Sage box. My sage box doesn't even have a 64 bit cpu, DOH! I'm just wanting to be able to use my office computer's 64 bit cpu to its full potential (which IS kinda hard without all the supporting drivers and software)

So does anyone that uses the x64 version of windows that is already out see any major performance gains over XP 32 bit?

There will be a 32bit version of Vista (and call it Vista, don't call it WinVi), plus I dont see how 64bit OS will make SagetTV better than 32bit. However, based on what I read, what will make a difference is the new graphic driver model that will be the Vista standard for all future graphic cards. This will potentially enable apps like SageTV to have a richer and more dynamic interface.

Have you guys seen the stuff about OPM in Vista ? http://features.engadget.com/entry/1234000143050582/ It seems to be aimed directly at us HTPCer's (I know, thats a dumb word but I couldn't find a better one).
