Placeshifter w/MCE Receiver and remote?

I am running Ubuntu. I would like to use a MCE IR receiver with a MCE remote. Is this possible? If so, what do I need to do to make this work?

The MCE IR receiver needs a Windows driver to work. I don't see how this would be possible.

That is a crying shame. I guess I will install xp home.

Everytime I try to use linux for something I continue to run into limitations.

Oh well, thanks for the info.

Use LIRC

I am using MCE remote/receiver from my Linux client. You need to download and compile LIRC (www.lirc.org) or get pre-compiled packages with mceusb2 driver. Once installed, you just need to edit config file for mceusb remote and start lircd. Sage works with the remote with out any special setup in Sage. Let me know if you need help.

I started the winxp install this morning before going to work. I should had waited. i wanted to get this unit up an running for my daughter by tomorrow.

Oddly enough, winxp runs better on this P3 1GHz system than Ubuntu 7.1.

Thanks for the info. I have another system I may try linux on in the near future. This information will help then.

Thanks!

Hiya

I was thinking of playing around with this, but when I went in to setup on placeshifter, I didnt see the option to add a remote - where do I tell Sage about it ?

Thanks

Tim

I just installed my MCE remote on Ubuntu 8.10, took all of about a minute or two:

1) At the command prompt:

Code:
apt-get install lirc
A dialog popped up asking for my remote, I selected "new MCE remote (Philips, etc)". I am using the remote and receiver that came with MCE 2005.

2) After the install completed, I tested the remote by running the following at the command prompt:

Code:
irw
Pressing keys displayed on the console:

Code:
000000037ff07be6 02 Stop mceusb
000000037ff07be8 02 Record mceusb
000000037ff07bf2 02 Home mceusb
000000037ff07bef 02 VolUp mceusb
000000037ff07bd9 02 Guide mceusb
3) I started up SageTV placeshifter, and it recognized the remote automatically.

This works great...however, I have tried MythTV and this is part of the setup. Seems like remote controls would be an important part of a TV software program. The manual mentions that remote controls are setup during configuration. Perhaps that is only true with Windows?
