This is a new one to me, but maybe someone can shed some light. Every time I try to tune a channel from my server, I get "There was an error playing <whatever I wanted to watch> ERROR (-17): The playback request could not be completed due to a network failure.

Now, my MVP is working but not the software client.... weird. I attached a screen capture

Thoughts?

It is happening on 6.0.19 client, so I thought it was just a problem with the 6.0.19 release version. I've tried upgrading to BETA RC and back down, but the issue still exists.

Every time I try to tune a channel to watch it from a SageTV client (6.0.19 or an RC, doesn't matter) I get a network failure (-17)

Please see the attached screen shot.

Thanks.

That error indicates a network failure on the client when it tried to make a certain type of request. I don't think I've ever actually seen this error message before....

Post your logs of the client + the server for when it occurs and something should show up in there. Make sure they're both on the same version as well.

I'm so pleased I've found something new. Name it after me! I will go turn on logging on the client and server. Give me about ten minutes to figure out how and then post them.

Is this DST compliant? You may want to consider updating all machines to Java 1.6. Not that it solves this, but there were a few issues with the 1.5 especially if you are trying to use VMR.

MVP now working

I performed a "hard reboot" after cold starting the MVP (30 minutes between power cycles) and the download completed. MVP works fine so far.

Give me a moment to download the update to Java and I'll try it.

Server is P4LianLi -- intel Dual Core w/ 1Gb DDR2 memory w/ a pair of 300Gb SATA-150, Avermedia A-180 HDTV tuner and Hauppauge PVR-150 for the DirecTV feed. Intel MB. Wired 100Mb to a Linksys WRT54G. Not in service mode.

Client machine is intel 3.0G 800Mb FSB w/ 1Gb DDR (PC3200) w/ single 300Gb SATA-150. Wired 100Mb to the Linksys WRT54G.

MVP is 802.11g and is working fine to server.

No other clients running on network, although I'm licensed for one more plus two placeshifter licenses.

where the client goes to pasture?

I'm no expert, but I'm guessing the clients dies here:

I am not sure what this means. Your client looks to be running 1.5.0_11, but your server log states 1.5.0_04. I would suggest running 1.6 http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

I and many others have noticed a few improvements over 1.5. Also, do you have any issues with normal file transfers, etc., no problems with the wiring or router? Do you run a custom firmware on the router?

I think you've got some bad networking hardware based on those logs. Network communication is just timing out at random points.

Those TFTP timeouts were gerenated from the MVP trying to boot. It's quite a distance from the WRT54G and getting some help from a Cisco wireless bridge to boost the signal upstairs. I like the MVP, but it's a neat toy to play with upstairs. I'm all confused about the client not working though. That's where I'm really befuddled. Got any idears??

Those timeouts regarding TFTP are completely normal.

Thanks for that data. I did not know. Before I upgraded to 6.0.19 (and subsequently 6.1.6RC) my clients worked fine. There's been no changes to the network and I don't have any loss of data transfers that I am aware of. Is there anything else I could look at? This one has completely stunned me.

Let me pose this: the only change made across the network has been the incorporation of McAfee software to include their firewall "protection" -- what if that is causing the network issue (like a specific port being blocked?)

There have been a few recent comments around here about McAfee causing problems using SageTV & those problems disappeared after completely removing it. Try uninstalling McAfee & try again. It might have just been the McAfee privacy service, but I would try a complete uninstall.

I turned off the firewall, but that didn't seem to help. Uninstalling the anti-virus and firewall protection on the PC doesn't seem like that would be the best solution.

What other options for making SageTV work are there, other than disabling the software to protect the PC?
