Jacket_P Folder
I've been toying with integrating my DVD library into Sage.
When I view a list of DVD's, the movie image shows up multiple times. I figured out that it's using the .mp2 files in the jacket_p folder. I typically see 3 of them, labeled something like J00___5S.MP2. They don't look like they're used when playing the DVD, but don't really know their true purpose, except for something like Sage. Would like to know what other users do about this. I'd like to just have one image per DVD listed. Do I have to delete all but one? Does it matter which one I use? I really don't want to have to do that, since I have hundreds of DVD's. Also, What about DVD's that don't have that folder. Are there alternatives? Thanks. |

What do you use to rip DVDs? I don't have any jacket_p folder or mp2 files. I just have VIDEO_TS folders with VTS_**_*.VOB files, etc.
I am thinking of converting all of these to regular video files since rips are less supported - the Android client doesn't play them, for example.

https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/...icture-for-DVD Seems that this is an old technique, and maybe not used anymore. Most of my searches showed links 10 years old or more. Not all of my DVD's have this folder either. Do you use Sage to manage your DVD's? Android can't play a DVD? Is that Android TV or your something like Nougat? Thanks |

I do use SageTV to play back all of my video files but most of the files are not in DVD structure - they have been converted to MP4 or something similar using Handbrake or other video processing tools.
By Android I mean the SageTV Android client that runs on devices like an Nvidia Shield or MiBox3. That is likely to become the client of choice for SageTV in the future as it is easier and cheaper to manage than a PC client and SageTV extenders have not been made for about a decade. And with that client you can't play back files in a DVD structure but you can play back regular video files - like MP4s or MKVs or whatever.

Thanks Wayne,
I've been reading about Android TV and just now learning about Sage's mini-client. By that, I assume it uses an existing player on the Android box? Channelmaster replaced their old DVR with an Android device. Thinking if it can support the Sage client it could make a good transition until CM supports external storage. Not looking forward to converting DVD's though. A lot of work and for the most part I like the DVD format. Anyone else worked with the Jacket_P folder or video images for DVD's in Sage? |

You still need a server but you can but multiple AndroidTV devices around your house to play back SageTV content in many rooms. The good thing about the AndroidTV devices is that they are very good for playing back content from YouTube, Netflix, etc. And if you want to switch from SageTV to Kodi or Plex then you can still use them for that. And you can get them for as little as $69 for the MiBox3 at WalMart.
I use the old HD200 and HD300 extenders to do this - I have 8 or 9 TVs around my house (one fewer in winter) and an extender at each TV.

Here are your options:
DVD in file mode (ISO mode supported with plugin to mount images): Sage will playback DVD with menu support on full client and extenders. All extra features, seamless branching supported. No support for android miniclient. Meta data will work as long as the DVD is a movie; TV or episodic content will cause problems with meta data. DVD ripped to MKV, MP4 etc... (using Handbrake, MakeMKV etc...) Support for playback across all clients, extenders and miniclients. DVD menus, extra features are lost unless ripped separately and then can cause havoc unless viewed in sage in folder view. DVDs that use seamless branching for multiple versions (theatrical vs director cuts) will need each version ripped separately. Meta data will work correctly for movie and tv/episodic content. Blu-ray ripped to file mode: No menu support or miniclient support. Sage clients/extenders will playback longest playlist which is usually the main content however for TV/episodic content this will cause issue. Extra features are technically accessible but you only have duration as an indication of the file content. HD100 may not play depending on bitrate. Meta data will work correctly for movies but not for TV/episodic content. Blu-ray ripped to MKV: Support for playback across all clients, extenders (HD100 may not play depending on bitrate) and miniclients. No menu and extra features are lost unless ripped separately and then can cause havoc unless viewed in sage in folder view. Blu-rays that use seamless branching for multiple versions (theatrical vs director cuts) will need each version ripped separately. Meta data will work correctly for movie and tv/episodic content. I personally rip all TV/episodic content to MKV using MakeMKV. DVD/blu-ray movies I leave in file mode. |

Not looking forward to that. I've been using an old version of PowerDVD for over 10 years, and it's worked like a charm, though it only works with DVD's and standard definition mpg files.
DVD's play fine in Sage, but I'm not putting a lot of effort into it. With the size of my library growing, it's becoming a bit unwieldly. Future prospects will include categorizing according to genre, and searching for actors, etc. Thanks for the reply. |
