2.35:1 aspect ratio

I have some movie files that were originally in something like a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, but when I play them in SageTV (v9 on Windows 10, with AR mode set to Source) they are stretched vertically to fill the screen. It's as if it can't tell what the Source AR is and is defaulting to using Fill instead. Is there a way to add a 2.35:1 AR mode to the Fill/Source/4x3/16x9 collection of modes already in SageTV?

Or alternatively, is there a 3rd party tool that will let me post-process the movie file in a way that will help SageTV do the right thing?

If it makes any difference, I'm using the LAV video decoder.

Using MediaInfo on the file I see that the metadata says that it is 16:9, so I guess I just need to find a tool that will let me edit that value.

What's the resolution and what was used to create the file? It almost sounds like it's an anamorphic file that doesn't have the correct display aspect ratio (DAR) set.

The resolution is 720x400 and it was created by Handbrake. It was created a few years ago so I don't know what handbrake settings were used. Based on my limited understanding of anamorphic I would say yes, it probably is.

I should probably just track down the disks and rip them again, but I was thinking there would be an easier way to do it if it's just some metadata in the .mp4 file that needs tweaked, or if there was a way to set the AR to 2.35:1 during playback.

I used to know how to do that but it's been a while. Before I would use mp4box but I don't remember the necessary switches to make it work.

Don't know about just editing that value in the .mp4, but I'm thinking you could probably remux it and make that change during that process.

That's actually what mp4box does. It doesn't edit in place but remuxes it. I believe because the DAR information is encoded in the stream and repeated periodically (not in a header) it can't just be edited in place.
