MVP Aspect Ratio (another one!)
Well, here I go......I am using only MVP's to use Sagetv in Australia on 4:3 TV's.
The original Haupage(?) software will fill the screens fully with no image distortion no matter what aspect ratio the picture is. (i.e cut the edges off 16:9, and 4:3 video fills the screen.) Sage somehow overrides this and will show 16:9 in its full width, with bars top and bottom. This is the way I like it! That said, In Australia (or Melborne at least) all content is transmitted as 16:9, with 4:3 video having black bars added at the station on the ends (left and right) so it fills the screen on a 16:9 tv. this means that in Sage on the MVP I get a 4:3 image in the centre of the screen surrounded by black bars on all four sides!. If there was a way to "toggle" this "override" on and off I would have exactly what I need as I love watching some of the older movies/shows that were made as 4:3. This is for "live TV", so the utils that can change the aspect ratio of files is really not of any use to me as I want a transparent solution for the wife (no computer involvment) Any thoughts? In the client, I'd set up another AR to zoom appropriately (i.e. on my client I have Fill set to zoom in those 4:3 programs with 4-sided borders - works a treat). Unfortunately, you can't switch ARs easily on a MVP, so I don't believe it's possible there...

If there is any way at all to switch ARs on an MVP, I'd like to know too

You can actually switch ARs on the MVP BUT it only just places the black bars without scaling the video..... so no the ARs are not applicable to the MVP.

I realize this is a very old thread, but....
Is there still no way to zoom with an MVP? I really wish I could get rid of the black bars on all 4 sides of the video when watching on my old 4:3 TV. (Unfortunately, I think I know the anwer to my question.) |

Isn't that just a matter of setting the overlay settings? You know, the screen with the 4 corners that you can move around?

Do you mean the overscan settings? I have not tried that but I imagine that would work somewhat but it would then be way over-zoomed for the menus/UI and regular 16:9 video (without black bars on the sides). I would want to be able to switch it quickly and easily depending on what I'm watching.
What I have a problem with is 16:9 video that have black bars on the sides. So when I watch stuff formated like this with my MVP on my old 4:3 TV, I get black bars on all four sides....kinda annoying. Sage is displaying the video correctly as it is broadcasted. It just doesn't look right on a 4:3 TV. I hear you can zoom on the HD-100, but that doesn't help me too much right now. Alfie |

There is a plugin for SageTV but I don't believe it works with the MVP. This is because of the way the MVP deals with the video. It's really a very limited device in that reguard. I don't know that it can display anything outside of 4:3 or 16:9 480i

Yes, I think I've used the plugin that you're refering to and it works pretty well for for my SageTV client running on a PC....but you're right, I don't think it works for the MVP. I guess, like you said, the limitation is on the MVP. It is what it is.
