Unraid & Channel Changing - Confused

I've seen strong recommendations for Unraid, and I think I want to give it a try (I have no experience in this realm). I currently am running an older Core2Duo e4300 on Win10 and would plan to just try Unraid on this hardware (I am assuming the SageTV Docker can work on this vintage). Unraid would be nice as I have an old Readynas NV that I'd assume to decom or turn into backup.

I'm sure I'll come up with other questions, but my biggest confusion is how I'll control my cable box. Right now, I have firewire setup and an HD PVR connected.
  • By the way, this is an old Comcast cable box. Any likelihood a new one would give me better video quality?

Can I do Firewire on SageTV Docker? Do I need to go IR? What's the best/easiest hardware for me to use? I never tried to use the HDPVR for this, have seen USB UIRT, and mentions of CommandIR <which isn't being sold>. I'm lost and would love any advice on the easiest to maintain recommendation.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything on which to test FireWire, but I'm pretty sure the Linux version support firewire and likely the Docker version would support it as well. (maybe someone could confirm this, but I think it's that SageTV linux supports firewire).

The potential problem that I see is that maybe, the SageTV docker container doesn't have permissions to use the firewire port, but this could be changed manually, and later added to the startup script if needed.

My suggestion is try it out and see what happens

Thanks Stuckless.

I have 2 HDs and a USB stick on order now and look forward to trying this out soon.

If I find I can't do Firewire (or if I find out I can't do it anyway due to my CableCo), what's the best Docker Friendly IR approach? I take it CommandIR is well spoken of (but not available). I'm not clear on what the "GenTuner" will be controlling if that is used. Does that interface with a USB UIRT? Or, any leads for me to read up on to understand the IR side of things?

I personally haven't used USB UIRT, but I think it's supported under linux now. If so, then gentuner could be used control it... At the very least, out of the box, the HDPVR IR might work as well... but again, never tried it myself.

Once you get a setup, we'll help you get this sorted out... You are like going to run into challenges but hopefully we can solve them.
