Unhappy STV Service Lockups

Hello,

For the past few months I have been having a new problem with the STV service locking up. Once the service memory usage reaches above 1gig I get the "spinning wheel of death" and can't restart the service; the only fix is reboot.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any suggestions of where I should start to look for troubleshooting?

Thanks,
Will

My HEAP size is set to 400 (1024).

The system has 6gigs of RAM installed, however, only 2.49 GB of RAM is available to the operating system. The system is a 32bit OS (Windows 2003) so it should support 4gigs but I had to disable PAE to fix issues with my HVR-2250. The paging file is set to system managed and is currently 2551.

To me, the issue sounds like I'm running out of RAM. The SageTV service, with a fresh reboot and all my extenders turned on, uses 700MB of RAM. However, in theory, the paging file should kick in...

IF you are genuinely running all 7 extenders listed in your signature, then that is going to be an issue. There is a finite amount of heap space that each is going to require. This can be minimized by not using fanart, but it's still going to be close to the limit. The alternative you have is to run the linux server, even in VM on your existing machine, which can run in a 64-bit JVM, and can handle all the extenders you would like to throw at it - but with you running 32-bit windows (not sure why, if you've got 6GB of RAM), virtualization may not be the best option either.

I usually have four extenders always turned on plus a client (but that doesn't count towards the heap).

I would love to switch to linux, my main hold-up as been the huge NTFS formatted RAID drives I have. But running linux in a VM I could then still write to the drives as a shared drive over the virtual network interface.

I stuck with 32-bit because I wanted firewire channel changing support but it might be time to jus bite the bullet and go with a USB-UIRT.

Thanks for the advice. I think a modern OS and VM for SageTV is the way to go with my current setup.
