I had several 2 TB fail on me rather quickly also the replacements were just as bad.

I keep a spreadsheet of the hard drives I use. Most of the 3TB Seagate hard drives I purchased a year ago failed in less than a year and all 3 of my warranty replacements failed in less than 3 months. I stopped bothering because it wasn't worth the cost of shipping it back to them for another 3 month refurb. I now only buy Toshiba (WD is good, but they are more expensive). I have had only one Toshiba failure and many of the ones I have today were purchased at the same time as the first Seagate hard drives.

I'm glad I just replaced my 3TB seagate (which was failing) with an HGST.

I had 4 out of 4 Seagates fail, the last 3TB was out of warranty. Never had a drive fail before this, probably because they were other brands.

Wow. Almost all my drives are SG, even in the RAID box. I still have one 3TB sitting in the shipping box planned for security recordings.

We had 2 fail in an 8bay raid box at work a couple years ago. Lucky we got the array rebuilt before the 2nd failed the next week.

I've stayed away from Seagates on the advice here (and this thread makes me glad).

However, in December 2005 (I know because I just ran across the box and receipt last week!), I bought a 40GB Seagate portable drive that has remained plugged into my work computer (holds my personal files, music, etc.) and it's been running just fine for 10.5 years now. So either I got lucky, or they were putting out a better product a decade ago.

I've had good success with Seagate drives - after a handful of them in the past 5 or 7 years, I have never had a Seagate failure. I have had 100% failure on (3) Western Digital Green drives, however - the (3) drives that WD sent as a replacement under warranty are working (with the head parking disabled).

I think it was just the 3TB Seagate drives that were a problem. I had 3 of them and all failed after about 2 years. They were the 3TB Barracuda models.

Other sizes and models of Seagate drives I think had similar reliability to drives from any other manufacturer.

Sadly, the failures go well beyond the 3 TB drives. I've gone thru over a dozen 1.5T and 2T Seagate desktop drives. Even though they'd been installed in a range of different enclosures and systems, they all failed at about the same age. During one 4-month period, I had more than 6 drives rotating thru the warranty replacement process. And then the replacements themselves all failed at about the same time. Amazing how each of them would all suddenly develop large numbers of bad sectors (20, 30, 40, as reported by SMART monitoring software). Nearly 100% failure rate at 5 yrs. Total junk. It'll be a long time before I buy another high-capacity Seagate disk.

On the other hand, most of the smaller-capacity Seagate disks (160GB and smaller) are still running well with more than 10 years on them. Still no grown defects. Obviously a completely different design.

The biggest problem I've had with drives is the shipping. If you buy retail drives the problems are drastically reduced. I try to never buy OEM drives any more and definitely DON'T buy OEM drives from Newegg.

I sure wouldn't mind getting some money back for the 7 drives which failed. Of the 10 I bought, the remaining 3 are still in service, but I'm confident they will be the next ones to fail. All 7 drives were replaced at least once and some up to 3 times before their warranties ran out and I replaced them with WD or HGST drives.

All of my failed Seagate drives had retail packaging. I've never purchased "bare" drives. Read too many reports how Newegg just lets the drive shift around in a box of peanuts, clearly contrary to the manufacturers packaging/shipping specs. Amazon is guilty of this too. I've seen first-hand how Fry's retail stores (mis)handle bare drives. Not worth the grief.

My Server all has 2GB WD Red or Samsung drives. My Backup NAS all has 5GB HGST drives. No problems. No Seagates anywhere.

As I am replacing drives, I'm replacing them with server rated HDs. I still have Seagates in the machine, but have been buying WD on replacement. I will probably consider HGST next time as well.

Beware

After reading this thread, I ordered a 5TB Samsung external drive (USB3) and after unpacking, horrors! there was a Seagate warranty included. Evidently Samsung is using Seagate drives in their externals.

It was paid for by my company, and has 3 year warranty, so I'll hold my breath. (Not too long, I retire in 12 months!).

Samsung HDD division was purchased by Seagate a long time ago. There haven't been any true Samsung drives in a long time. The same thing happened when Seagate purchased Maxtor even longer ago. The Maxtor drives were replaced with a Seagate model and firmware but a Maxtor name on the drive.

Yeah, the Samsung HDDs are all Seagate's now But, the Samsung SSDs are still made by Samsung and they are excellent.

Opps. I should have made that distinction. Thanks.

Isn't HGST owned by WD now?

I've had more WD drives fail on me than my Seageates. I read that the newer Seagates should be among the best. I've got 6 of them with no issues (one DOA due to shipping, but that isn't the manufacturer's fault).

I've seen failures on all manufacturers. I can't really tell who has lower rates and who doesn't.

The seagate 8tb archive drives are going to be my next purchase for a new unRAID build. Maybe I should ponder on that for a bit before my purchase.

Yes HGST is owned by WD. My worst failure rate and with the worst failure has been on a Seagate drive (worked fine for a couple of years and had a good smart report one day gone the next - bios didn't even see it). But I have had failures with all brands. HGST has been the best of currently selling drives followed by WD with Seagate barely worse than WD. Best drives in history were the genuine Samsung drives before Seagate bought them.
