Pegboard Project

I decided to untangle and de-clutter my Cable, and Antenna setups.

Using zip ties on hand and a cheap pegboard, I was able to get my 4 HDHR's with networking, coax, amps, splitters, and power on the board.

That looks great I have wires tangled all over the place tired of looking at it.

What length are your zip ties?
Dimension of peg board?

Without being at home, the zip ties are probably 12 Inches long and maybe 1/8th inch wide, and the Pegboard is 4foot by 2foot, I believe. I could get actual measurements later if you would like.

That's the size I am looking to order from homedepot ... I appreciate you posting this I was looking for an easy way to do this and you have supplied it. Home Depot appears to have everything including the Squid Power strips.

This is fabulous! I am so tired of "organizing" all the wires only to have them tangled again before I finish the process - this looks great and I plan to try it out.

Thank you!!

I did splitters/amp and network switch first. Then I figured out how long my network and coax cables were to do the HDHR's next. Last I did power by figuring out how to route it around the back into one trunk, the. Down to the squid, which I splayed out.

Yeah I started with the tuners big mistake... Had chords hanging all over the place and no where to plug them in... I plan on starting from scratch tomorrow... it is not as easy as I thought.

Not easy at all!! I haven't started the actual work yet as I'm waiting on some supplies that I'll get when I'm in the States next week (I've decided to finally label all cords and sockets as last time I "rearranged" I was lost.)

I've been drawing it out on paper and, even there, it is confusing! But I can't wait to start - the idea of some order out of this chaos is appealing. I don't have as many OTA units but I'm planning to attach my modem, VOIP box, router and switch as well.

Yeah I had it all nicely laid out on paper ... and then all hell broke loose lol no cables labeled etc.. I should have started with the switches and the power strips on the back first.

Good tip, thanks. I've been drawing out all the cables and connections too trying to arrange it all most effectively. I have a friend who is a great packrat and I now have a stack of bread bag closers to put on the wires - 2 on each and I've ordered colored numbered circular stickers (4 of each number come with it) to stick on each cable tag and where each end connects - this time before I undo everything - I learned my lesson last time! They'll go on the power suppliers and devices as well as too many of those are unmarked.

I had already ordered short ethernet cables (so tired of the 6ft ones dangling all over) so those will work well for connections on the board itself and I have a couple of short jumper coax cables I can use from the coax splitter to the OTA units.

I'm sure, though, that no matter how much I've planned, when the day comes, there will still be lots of arranging and rearranging.

Good luck!

Finally - done! This is, sadly, nowhere as neat and organized as Mike's but it works and it is wonderful not having tangled wires and cables at every turn.

It is HARD to do!! You plan and plan and then things never go according to that plan.

Thank you, Mike, for the idea,
Julie

Yeah, it feels good to not see the tangled mess where all that stuff used to be.
You are seeing v2.1 of my board. The hard part was getting the stuff onto the pegboard, when you need the correct supplies, cables, and don't want to disrupt recordings etc.....

When I'm having signal issues, you should see the look on the cable guy's face when I show him to "The Cabinet."

It's not good.

Might have to give this a shot.

All of my stuff is currently crammed in the top of my hall coat closet. Made the shelf nearly full depth and put a cheap fan that draws from the top and discharges back into the house above it. It works well, keeps things well out of the way, and things stay cool enough in there - but man working on it is a pain in the arse. I would love to relocate it to a distant part of the house - it was only ever where it is because it was close to the living room, and for a time, it served as the living room's client as well (with really long HDMI and USB cables) - but since it's been there so long, there's be a lot of wiring work to redo. The network switch resides there, the router is there, the lone cable and antenna runs go to there. And there's certainly no way to put it on pegboard or otherwise dress it up. guess I'll just have to wait 4-5 years when I end up in a new house.. :-)

Finally did this!

Finally got all the pieces to put this together. Took quite a while just to untangle the mess that was there and clean everything. I had already made a layout using a drawing program. Makes it easy to make changes. I don't have as many components as some of you guys..ie my tuners are in the htpc. Everything looks so nice and neat, I have been going out of my way to look at it. I've included pics of front and back, but front pic doesn't show bottom power squid cause I added it a little later. Also cheap phone so pic not great.

Congratulations! Looks great (and very neat) - I love how you say you have been going out of your way to look at it - a month later and I am still moving the screen which blocks it and staring in admiration! (My setup is in my bedroom (small apartment living) so it was even more vital to clean up all the mess.)
