Charter converted channels to Digital Format but they don't show up on ATSC input.

Charter recently switched some basic analog channels to digital format. I have a Happaugue WinTV-HVR-1600 which has both an analog and ATSC digital tuner. So i switched my cable input from the analog to digital input of the board and did a channel scan but SageTV could not find the new digital channels. I thought i should be able to see the channels on the clear QAM input. Could it be that maybe Charter is encrypting the digital channels? Any thoughts?

ATSC is digital over the air, not Cable.

It's possible. But most providers have at least a few channels (mostly the locals) available in the clear.

The SiliconDust website has a page where you can enter your zipcode and choose your provider and they will tell you what channels they think you should be able to get. You may want to start there for a sanity check.

Go to www.silicondust.com, then click "support" then "channels". Enter your zip code and it will bring up a page. Look at the upper-left corner for a drop down list of possible providers (make sure you choose the right one).

UPDATE: I bought a new Digital TV and plugged in our Charter cable and scanned for Digital channels. After the scan i was able to receive 50+ channels on the TV.

So i plugged the cable into my Happaugh WinTV HVR-100 "ATSC/QAM digital TV in" input but i don't get any channels during a scan with SAGEtv. This input is supposd to pick up unencrypted QAM cable channels.

What's wrong? What do i need to receive digital cable with SageTV?

i can't remember what my problems were but when I set up my system years ago I never could get clear QAM to work on my Hauppauge 1600. Have you tried scanning in the old Hauppauge app? I still have a 1600 in my server since Time Warner where I am still has 75 or so analogue channels.

My solution for the clear QAM channels was to add an HDHomerun tuner to my setup. I only get my locals in digital high def through clear QAM and get the extended cable channels in SD analogue.

Thanks. I haven't tried the WinTV software yet but may do so just to confirm. But i am leaning towards the HD homerun tuners that will work with Sage.
