well, he DID say HR24, which DOES have optical - but yes, on the H25, there is coaxial only (not that it really matters, it's the exact same signal - I've never understood why they even bothered with optical, other than to sell different cables).

Oh yea, forgot about that. Nice catch. Monoprice coax-optical converter.

The reason they use optical (toslink) is that it creates signal isolation (coax is subject to ground loop noise and attenuation). The only downside to optical is that it is much more expensive and not as resistant to bending (otherwise it would be preferred for everything - including video)

Right, but the SPDIF protocol is designed to not be affected by 60Hz ground loop issues.

SHS - good summary - my only correction (and to me one of the great advantages to dish) is that you can use a single USB-UIRT since you can set each dish box (up to 9) to use different IR code sets.

I am having trouble moving away from dish to Comcast trying to get the IR control set up with no interference.

Oh you right I plumb forgot remote address on the dish box
One USB-UIRT with Quad IR Emitter Eyes
Or a pair of Dual or even Quad IR Emitter Eyes
One Stereo to Mono
Set Zone up

No need to even set zoning up. With no Zone parameter set, the USBUIRT will broadcast transmissions to all LED's (built-in, plus left and right pins of output jack). Just have to learn each dish remote address as different .ir files, and set up each box in sage to use the appropriate IR file). It will always broadcast every IR transmission to every box, but it won't matter, as only the one set to the right address will listen to it.

Not really understanding what you are saying. If no Z? prefix is used (or if Z0 is used) then it is broadcast to all LED's - which is fine for dish. It doesn't matter whether you use external or internal led's.

Not from what I re-called when you using a real 1/8" Dual Mono Jack to 1/8" one side will not work that why I had to use Zone when I had Dish and I had the USB-UIRT 56KHz IR Receiver Add-On Option that day Jeff started supporting USB-UIRT.

I have never needed to use additional blasters for 4 Dish boxes. I just aim the front of the USBUIRT toward the front of a stack of 4 boxes... never seemed to have problem controlling them all.

hmmm so many options to consider. No need to start any new threads, I'm getting some great info from everyone. At the moment I'm leaning towards a single colossus with 4 DTV boxes and IP tuning. I would love to use the r5000 mods but thats pretty pricey and I worry about them dropping support for those boxes in the future. On the same subject, does anyone know how the satellite companies send out updates to their boxes, and is there anything you can do to prevent that? Is it done only through LAN or can they do it over satellite? Would blocking the updates prevent them from tagging new channels with HDCP?

updates are done from the satellite - not much you can do to prevent it. I'm not sure what you mean by using a single colossus with 4 DTV boxes - are you talking about just a single one in HD, and using your old SD cards for the others?

ehh for some reason I was thinking the colossus was a quad tuner...lol. I can still accomidate 4 of them though, so no problem.

Not with Directv though. Too bad. Would be pretty sweet if cable card was a universal standard. Oh well
