advice on used STX-HD100
when buying these used off ebay, or here for example, what does one need to be wary about regarding the license that accompanies the unit, or, if no license accompanies the unit, what kind does one need to aquire?

Both the Hauppauge MVP and SageTV STX-HD100 media extenders come with the required media extender license when purchased directly from SageTV.

but SageTV isn't selling them anymore. So....to your knowledge, is the license married to a specific, serial numbered unit?

As I recall that license is the same as the placeshifter license. It is not tied to the specific device, it floats between active devices. Therefore, you only need 1 license for each user that be active at the same time.

The HD100 & the MVP use a placeshifter license, no, its not tied to any specific unit. One placeshifter license can be used for an MVP and a HD100, but not simultaneously.
Hope that helps |

your major concern will be the power supply capacitor issues. but if you can barely call yourself anywhere close to a beginner at soldering you can fix the issue pretty easily.
