Old Sage TV Version Problem

I know I'm remiss in not upgrading my Sage TV system to a more current version but you know the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I've been running an old version (v5.0.4.92) for years with no problems and it's been doing just what I wanted. I'm NOT running it as a service.

The UPS powering it died months ago (Feb. 2012) and I just got around to repairing it today.

When the Sage TV system (XP SP3) booted up Sage TV started. Then it wanted to upgrade the Java JRE and silly me let it. It initially went to 6.37 and then I let it go on to 7.

The smarter of you certainly know what that did to sagetv.exe. It complained about missing MSVCR100.dll and wouldn't run.

So I did a Windows System Restore to before the UPS failed.

Now it still will won't run. Not even any messages now.

I don't know what you might need to help me but for a start here's my .log fille.

This seems to be related to http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40521 but the Windows System Restore didn't correct it.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks. I did a Windows System Restore back to after Java 7 and installed MSVCR100.dll. All is fine now.

Whew.

I really ought to upgrade Sage TV.

Upgrade to the last version 7, copy over the new exe file so that you can use your v5 key. Then install the Gemstone and BMT plugins so the user interface will look quite good - quite different from v5, but you shouldn't have any problems navigating.

Interesting. But could you give more details on "copy over the new exe file so that you can use your v5 key"?

Copy what exe file from where to where?

I'm using CVD (Half-D1) resolution. Is that still supported in v7? Will it run on my pitiful old Dell GX270? I think it's got 1MB of RAM and an 80GB HD.

What functions do I gain from v7?

v5 is working pretty good for me. Almost hate to rock the boat.

First sticky post, first message: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56225

I've been running SageTV since 2004 and have always kept up to date, so it's hard to remember what has come with each version. If you take a look at the v7 original announcement you can see what it brought over v6. The biggest and most obvious thing was a completely new UI and vastly upgraded api for plugin developers.

Your system is probably not up to the task of running interface plugins with cover art as it's recommended to update Sage's own Java heap size to 1GB. You'd need at least 2GB on your system to do that effectively.

But you might as well take a look through the Gemstone forum to decide whether you like what it brings to the table. You may find it's worth putting a few small hardware upgrades into your system to end up with essentially brand new and much more up to date PVR experience.
