Microsoft Surface x86 - Ultimate portable SageTV device?
Has anyone tried running client or placeshifter on the Windows 8 preview?
Provided they work as expected, I'm thinking the x86 version of the Microsoft Surface Tablet would make an excellent portable sage viewer. Not to belittle the work that has been done on streaming to the iPad, but it couldn't compare to the experience of running a fully functional sagetv client or placeshifter on a Windows tablet. I really see this sort of legacy application compatibility as Microsoft's only chance for tablet success. Not that a few dozen SageTV users will make or break Microsoft's plans... I'm thinking more along the lines of proprietary enterprise applications that businesses would now be able to run on tablets issued to their employees. Exploiting this aspect of Apple's locked down OS approach could be the only thing that will give them a shot. Thoughts? -uberpixel

It runs great on windows 8... both server and clients.

That's what I've heard.
I'm guessing that the hardware specs and horsepower of the tablet may be the only issue with getting client to run well. A touch/tablet optimized UI for SageTV would be cool...

That and the bandwidth of the connection to the tablet would be the issues I can see. I'm willing to be the arm based stuff will work seeing as though those little processors are pretty powerful.

What will have to be done to make it work on Arm processors - will it have to be recompiled? Or will it run in Java on Win8 RT? It sounds like most Win x86 apps will NOT run on WinRT.

That's what I'm worried about. The ARM tablets will only run specific apps. Only time will tell.

The main reason for an ARM table is the easy 10-15 hour battery life vs. 6-8 on an Intel tablet. Even the best low power Intel chip uses about 4-8 times the power of an ARM. The ARM is a little slower than the Intel, but not enough to make up that big of a power jump. Plus, you can already get an ARM chip with every device in the chip except the RAM/ROM, while Intel still needs some external support chips. Next gen Intel chips will fix most of the the integration, but I'm not sure they can defeat the power issues, when you are talking 10x transistors.
