Question Microsoft Surface x86 - Ultimate portable SageTV device?

Has anyone tried running client or placeshifter on the Windows 8 preview?

Provided they work as expected, I'm thinking the x86 version of the Microsoft Surface Tablet would make an excellent portable sage viewer.

Not to belittle the work that has been done on streaming to the iPad, but it couldn't compare to the experience of running a fully functional sagetv client or placeshifter on a Windows tablet.

I really see this sort of legacy application compatibility as Microsoft's only chance for tablet success. Not that a few dozen SageTV users will make or break Microsoft's plans... I'm thinking more along the lines of proprietary enterprise applications that businesses would now be able to run on tablets issued to their employees. Exploiting this aspect of Apple's locked down OS approach could be the only thing that will give them a shot.

Thoughts?

That's what I've heard.

I'm guessing that the hardware specs and horsepower of the tablet may be the only issue with getting client to run well.

A touch/tablet optimized UI for SageTV would be cool...

That and the bandwidth of the connection to the tablet would be the issues I can see. I'm willing to be the arm based stuff will work seeing as though those little processors are pretty powerful.

What will have to be done to make it work on Arm processors - will it have to be recompiled? Or will it run in Java on Win8 RT? It sounds like most Win x86 apps will NOT run on WinRT.

It'll work just like a x86 Windows 7 tables, except you would have to remove that nasty UI on windows 8 before it would be usable. (I guess on a table, the new UI would be OK, it sure isn't OK on a desktop or Laptop, IMHO!)

Windows 7 & 8 have the same basic core, just a few IO tweaks, and the UI are new.

That's what I'm worried about. The ARM tablets will only run specific apps. Only time will tell.

Took me a while to get used to it on my laptop... but once I got used to it and pinned the programs I use to the start menu. I have not used the desktop at all. I love it.... Logitech is coming out with a nice mouse and a pad to go along with the new Start.

Boot to desktop

How to boot to desktop.

In notepad write or copy the code below.

Code:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=Explorer.exe,3

[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Save the file with the .scf file extension — name it something like ShowDesktop.scf

Schedule the file to run at logon.

The SageTV client is a java application that makes JNI (Java Native Interface) calls out to native x86 libraries. The SageTV libraries would need to be reverse-engineered and ported to ARM. See the Raspberry Pi thread, as it is the same issue -- running x86 binaries on arm.

Yeah. I guess I assumed ARM would be out of the question without some work from the company formerly known as Frey Technologies...

I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone would buy the ARM version with its limited application base when you can spend a little more and get access to millions of legacy applications. The fact that Microsoft is launching the RT first seems like it could sour their tablet efforts. I have a Windows Phone. I love the interface, but the lack of applications is a killer. I'm planning to switch to a broader ecosystem with my next phone. The legacy x86 apps are Microsoft's only chance for success in the tablet market. SageTV is a perfect example of such an application (even if it's small potatoes - the principle is the same). If Microsoft need to make money on RT based app sales to profit from their tablet, then they are screwed.

The main reason for an ARM table is the easy 10-15 hour battery life vs. 6-8 on an Intel tablet. Even the best low power Intel chip uses about 4-8 times the power of an ARM. The ARM is a little slower than the Intel, but not enough to make up that big of a power jump. Plus, you can already get an ARM chip with every device in the chip except the RAM/ROM, while Intel still needs some external support chips. Next gen Intel chips will fix most of the the integration, but I'm not sure they can defeat the power issues, when you are talking 10x transistors.
