Microsoft Portable Devices Get TiVo Playback

Microsoft is hoping a new partnership with TiVo will change all that. Microsoft's Windows Mobile devices, including Media Centers, Smartphones and Pocket PCs, will now support TiVoToGo for playback of recorded TV content while away from home.

To kick off the TiVoToGo extension to Microsoft devices, a chartered American Airlines flight will usher in the "Summer of Mobility" contest, in which TiVo will give one person a Portable Media Center and TiVo set-top box every day from June 21 through Labor Day.

"For the first time, travelers will have the ability to transfer their favorite shows stored on their TiVo Series2 digital video recorders to a Windows XP PC for playback on Windows Mobile devices," a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews.

I believe that the transfered files use Microsoft DRM protection. Plus Tivo adds the note:

Not all shows may be eligible for transfer from your TiVo box to your computer. Programming providers may restrict or limit the ability to record, display, view or transfer any particular program using a variety of copy protection mechanisms. The TiVoToGo feature is provided solely for personal, non-commercial use. Unauthorized reproduction, transfer or distribution of copyrighted works outside of your home may constitute an infringement of the rights of copyright holders.

The tivo2go thing so FAR is any and all shows... But they have a nasty little "key" that you have to enter in order to view the file. AND I think that it is limited to one machine (can't remember on that exactly as I only use one machine to view them).

It's entirely too easy to convert the .TIVO files to MPEG2 though. Download the elecard moonlight demuxer and the directx9 SDK and use the included GraphEdit.exe to convert to standard mpeg2. The conversion is quick, but you have to manually load the file and tell it which demuxer and output file to use.

They have been discussing things like pay-per-view movies only having a "shelf life" of one week or something before tivo deletes it. But since you can convert the files... It's a non-issue.

I download the program as mentioned Elecard Xmuxer Pro 1.0 and it did not pickup on any Tivo recording on my PC. Must I have done something wrong?
