Ok.. Just a quickie followup.. I installed the latest SSD firmware from Crucial's website (moved from rev 09 to latest version-- I think it was 10G) and the machine booted fine -- and has been up for a handful of hours without issue.. I think that was ultimately my complete issue!

Hopefully it will still be running this time tomorrow w/o crashing.. Now I just need to fix Sage which wont start for some reason.. perhaps something got corrupted somewhere along the way..

By the way.. Do any of you know how to fix the stupid boot loader for W7?

Since this happened, my machine virtually never loads W7 directly anymore -- it wants to load an old XP instance that has since been removed and therefore fails..

I tried using EasyBCD but it doesn't 'see' the other boot devices -- only the good one.. At this point I'm forced to press F8 during the start process to get a boot menu so I can select the correct install.. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

P.S. Does it matter what SATA port is plugged in first by chance? I know I don't have the cables in the same config as they were before this endeavor occurred..

I think BCDEdit is what you want - check here.

Thanks Bob..

I tried using that tool and it just does not see the other partition for whatever reason.. Below is what it spits out when I run it :

I'm gonna go try rebooting and use F10 which I just found out is supposed to allow editing of the boot manager options.. Not going to hold my breath..

When install operating systems, I always do it from scratch (unless I'm building many computers at work, then I use a image). I think keeping the old XP OS on that hard drive is not a good idea, especially when you look at all the trouble you've experienced so far.

I suggest installing Windows 7 on a new or different hard drive from scratch. If it is a used hard drive, wipe the drive before the Windows 7 install with drive wiping software. If you have an "upgrade" Windows 7 installation CD, you can install it from scratch, otherwise known as a "clean" install. If you Google "Windows 7 upgrade clean install" you will get a lot of advise.

You may want to think about reinstalling W7 from scratch. I think that will solve quite a few issues you could run into in the future. Having dual OS's on a drive (even though wxp is gone) will cause problems.

I feel your pain on that one. I need to do it to. I'm getting random explorer errors. Not sure what the deal is, but I think my aging hard drive may be dying. Oh boy.

Quickie followup.. I did a full re-install of W7 and it worked fine to fix my booting issue.. Unfortunately Sage was not happy -- at least the extenders -- they won't see Sage for some reason even though it is running.. I'll look at it further at some point..

You might want to check to make sure the Windows software firewall is disabled. I think it is enabled by default when you install Windows 7.
