Remote HD200: Movies Choppy, Recorded TV A-OK
I finally got an HD200 working at my son-in-law's house.
First thing I noticed was that playback of ripped DVDs was impossibly choppy and the sound was happening only occassionally. Second thing I noticed was that playback of recorded TV (HD programs, I'm pretty sure) was A-OK. Then I went to a movie that I had ripped to DVD fomat (.VOB....) and then converted to .MPEG. Playing the DVD version: same-old-same-old. Playing the .MPEG version: A-OK. There's no such diff at home. Bandwidth? Is there anything I can tweak on the server or HD200 to alleviate this? Or should I bite the bullet and convert my ripped DVDs to .MPEG?

Third and fourth things that I'm noticing:
- On a 1.1ghz Atom netbook over WiFi, DVD playback is iffy: sometimes it is OK, other times there are pauses. Nothing too heinous, but enough tb a nuisance - On the same netbook, same WiFi connection, less than 10 minutes later, playback of the .MPG version of a DVD that was giving even more than usual problems was smooth as one could ask for: no pauses, no nothing. My conclusion: If one can live without a DVD's menu structure, subtitles are not needed, and one can live without special effects like director's commentary, DVDs are best ripped to a non-native-DVD format like .MPG if one wants to watch them under anything but ideal CPU/bandwidth circumstances.
