stock tickers and other "crawls" = jumpy
Using a Colossus, I notice that certain channels using crawls (stocks, news, Snooki's drinking problems, etc) stutter visually from time-to-time. If I reboot, the problem goes away.
What is the likely cause? thanks

Have you found it to be playback related or recording related? I've seen this too on the recording side. I think it was the decoder I was using. Since I changed the decoder I haven't seen it again.

TvM: Is the source mpeg2, h.264, or other? What decoder are you using? I seem to have more stutter issues with crawls on h264 HDPVR files using the MS decoder so I switched to the Cyberlink and it works better. Still get an occasional stutter but not too often. |

Likely the cause is your codec for H264. I've seen that before on a friend's computer. Try running TMT (which supports hardware acceleration) or if on Win7 the builtin MS Decoder (which supports hardware acceleration)

Also change the MPEG2 codec from SageTV to either TMT or MSFT as well.

ok, all good suggestions - I'm using the W7 32 bit, MS DTV for mpg2 and h.264, Realtek HDMI ATI output..
the question was - why does it correct itself on reboot?

I've found that restarting the client seems to be just as effective as rebooting; not sure what the root cause is though. One thing I've thought about in the past is trying a new video card just to see if that makes a difference. My Nvidia 9700 is getting long in the tooth.

its no secret that most java based programs and well most programs in general suffer from bit-rot. Set up an automatic daily reboot in task scheduler. his should alleviate some issues
