Need video software to record gameplay in Windows

My kids are getting to the age that they want to record their gameplay of some of their windows games and put it up on Youtube. I know it must be possible because I see that they watch plenty of youtube videos from other people doing the same thing.

So my question is... What software is out there that will do this? Preferably I'd want something that would allow them to record the gameplay AND record their voice at the same time. I'd also prefer free (at least free to try) but I'm not against paying for it as well.

FRAPS will let you record anything that is rendered by directx. As far as voice recording, you could just add it in later with virtualdub or something.

EDIT: Just checked and it will record sound.

If will record voice on the fly as well, then that's probably what I'll try. I don't think they'll want to dub in the voice later
