Sage shutting down and won't restart!?!

I am hoping someone here can help me. Sometime during the last week we've started having an issue. Sage will startup as normal on boot but everytime we come back after extended times with the television off, Sage is shut down and won't restart. The service shows stopped and give me a permission issue when I try to restart it. I don't even know where to begin troubleshooting this as there is no error on screen or anything... it is just sitting at the desktop when we turn the TV on. None of our TV shows are recording... nothing. Very very frustrating.

Reliability????

I'm crashing several times per day lately. Always requires a reboot, but usually has a msg indicating something went wrong. My patience is near its end and official Tech Support doesn't seem to have any answers for me. Somehow this product has become unreliable sometime in the V7 beta cycle.

Been lurking in the forums for months waiting patiently for some solution, but suggestions are always along the line of a total system rebuild or buying extenders instead of $30 clients. Useless posts like "Mine is working fine" seem to bury anybody that dares suggest there's a problem. Tech support told me to try "Basic" video configuration. First of all I got no picture. Second how many days will go by before we get to some meat.

I believe the MPEGDEMUX.AX is at the heart of the playback crashes. There's no way to change this using the Reg Utility or setting merit values. It's hard-coded to use this demuxer which shows up in my Event Log as the faulting module.

I'm not looking for technical answers anymore. I'm curious how many people are unable to keep their systems running for more than a day or two.

Unhappy Beta

Well it is Beta...

Which in my world has always meant try at your own risk...but expect bugs

Sometimes, the bugs become an infestation that destroys the function of the original product...

Hope you can get back up and running, soon.

If you use windows 7, you could right click the sagetvservicecontrol.exe file and choose run as administrator and see if that fixes the problem. Also check the box where it says enable service recovery if its not checked.

In my experience, if you are looking for reliability, the setup that will be most trouble-free and the closest to a "consumer electronics" experience has the following characteristics:
  • Dedicated SageTV server, running on adequate hardware
  • Running fully-supported SageTV software (i.e. 7.0.23), not beta versions
  • HD200/HD300 Media Extenders connected via wired ethernet
Now, obviously there are plenty of people that are running Sage successfully on configurations that are different than above. But I think it's safe to say that the farther away that you get from the above configuration, the more likely you are to have problems with Sage, and the more technical expertise and time you will need to have to keep Sage running reliably.

In my current configuration, I rarely need to reboot my Sage server. Then again, I'm still running the 6.6.2 version of Sage. I've got a test server set up with the latest beta version of Sage with a Hauppauge Colossus installed, and am waiting for the official 7.1 version to come out before I finish testing and decide whether it's stable enough to become the "production" Sage server. In the meantime, 6.6.2 is keeping my wife and kids happy with it's stability.

Sorry for any confusion, my post was primarily in response to MrKrabs post...

Same here. 7.0.23.xxx (Release Version). Machine is dedicated to HTPC only. Keyboard and mouse put away on high shelf (to keep away from kids and occasional cat chases). Frankly 6 was rock solid and 7 (Beta) up until around version .14 or .15. On final release i rebuilt my machine, restoring the obligatory "clean OS install" backup and starting over with up-to-date drivers and the like. Hence, my frustration. It couldn't have been done more by-the-book.

I've got about enough tolerance to build a dedicated server (yes I hoard computer hardware) and see if the problem is isolated to Sage client or not. But again last night at 1:00 when watching F1 on SPEED crashed I vented and although I'm calmer now am still curious.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING STABILITY PROBLEMS?

I've been running a very stable SageTV system with 2 HTPCs and 1 HD100 for years. I have no HDPVR, no Colossus because I read way too many reports of issues with those devices. My HTPC systems are all running XP PRO.

I typically wait a week or so after a new beta is released before I'll load it.

I've never had any issues with stability on my setup even with the betas. I'm guessing I'm using hardware similar to the developers.

I'm running latest RELEASED Sage 7 on 2 systems, and all is fine. I take "mine" down about every 5 days or so, but only because I "play" with the system too much. Haven't missed a recording in ages. My dad's is up weeks at a time, as he records almost all the time.

One of the old 6.x versions ran for ~8 months when I took a job out of state!!!
