Sage just shutting down/crashing
I'm hoping this wont be happening again but i came home last night, turned the monitor on for my sage server checking it was recording what i wanted... and shock horror.. Sage wasn't even running... I'd missed 2 important shows that luckily i'd got recorded on another system...
I restarted Sage and went about doing stuff for the rest of the night.. at the end of the night i came back to turn the PC off and again Sage wasn't running.. I looked at its files to see when they'd last been written too and it had appeared to have stopped writing to files an hour or so ago.. I looked through the output files and there are no mentions of crashes in any of the logs.. I then tried to find the dr watson file to check that and this was even more confusing.. I couldn't find the log file at all.... Where should it be saved? I did a search of the whole hdd for drwtsn32.log (or whatever its supposed to be called) and it just wouldn't find it.. I'm running windows XP... If Sage becomes unstable in this manner (like it has NEVER been before) then I'll start to lose faith in it making recordings.. ANyone else suffered this?! ANyone know where the watson file is so i can look for exceptions etc.. Cheers |

I've only had one problem with Sage munging up a recording and I had been running other apps that use (read grab) my encoder without a reboot so I blame myself. Even then Sage recorded but without video. I'm a critic by nature , but I find Sage to be a very reliable 'recorder'. Obviously you know this, but keep in mind it is a beta. peace . . .

I did a google and it told me it was a log.. point being i even just searched for wtsn and it didn't find it.. any extension..
Dont get me wrong this is why I'm most disturbed, I've used Sage for about a year now I guess... its very very rarely crashed.. and always you'd get logs for such a thing.. the only crashes i'd get usually involved playing files or deleting etc.. This very same version of Sage2 has been stable for as long as i've had it installed.. over a week perhaps... the behaviour is the same as it wakes on a scheduled task and basically it was just recording.. no viewing... I'll see if it stayed up today but I really need to get the drwtsn file or something if it is shutting down almost instantly without Sage being able to write out any errors at all... although i've never seen it actually close down yet so i dont know exactly how it has shut down... I dont even know if windows did a hard reset and thats why.. I guess there are some times saved somewhere for when windows boots? |

Every error that happens on the PC will not generate a Dr. Watson error. I had something similar happen to me over a month ago. With a certain version of the Hauppague drivers I had installed, Sage TV would just quit. It would just go away from the systray and not be running. Sometimes I would catch it before it disappeared and bring it up but it would freeze and do nothing. Upgrading to the latest drivers from SHSPVR site fixed the issue. (This was prior to the beta)

Your PC may have a new hardware problem. Overheating CPU/tuner card/power supply, etc.

Check the event logs. Both the system and application.

I think you're getting good advice, you need to be sure your box is stable.
As falchulk mentioned, check the event logs for problems and critical errors. You can see when your XP box last rebooted by typing --> systeminfo at a dos prompt. The uptime is about 10-12 lines down. peace...

Thanks guys..
Fair enough you dont always get a drwtsn32.log but i'd still expect to see some form of an error log on there.. or is it recycled and cleared after so many weeks? There is NO file at all.. not just no mention of Sage at that point.. Looking at the event viewer I think i saw a restart happening in the evening.. most strange.. Thankfully today all is ok so far.. I've added a daily task so that i can see if its still there to easily spot a windows reboot.. I'll keep an eye on it.. I hope its not a hardware issue.. Its been the same for months.. I'm using cpuspeed or whatever its called which keeps the fans low till it overheats.. I've not installed a PVR driver for about 4 months or more.. I'm tempted to get a new one but I find the whole hauppauge driver install a joke.. it shouldn't require such a lengthy uninstall reinstall sequence.. Even then you still seem to have problems.. on the whole i'm quite happy with its encoding quality.. I get halos of edges left from previous frames sometimes.. especially if its dark but this too seems to vary... I'll keep an eye on this situation and if it becomes a problem i'll post again.. |
