Playon Dying?

Well I installed Playon for the first time and ran the plugin. I like it, However, It seems to be dying. The forums are drying up, Alot of the scripts don't function anymore if there available, The new API completely no existent? So While I like it, I am wondering if it would be worth paying for?

I don't know what you mean by dying. They just added March Madness stuff. They have added the Amazon Videos for Premiere customers. You need the latest version of any plugins that are developed by end users. But the included plugins work fine. I paid for Playon Premium when they first had specials going for it.

A while ago they (PlayOn themselves, not the forum denizens) said that they were working on some new method of pulling in videos - at the time, it was supposely going to revolutionize what content could be obtained via PlayOn (like, basically, anything).

Since then, it seemed like the forums dried up somewhat. I don't know if people are waiting for the change before working on more plugins, or if there are a large batch of developers secretly beta-testing and there are lots of bugs that are causing delays, or if it's just that people gave up and moved on to something else. There's also the fact that it seems like every new TV and BD player comes with more and more stuff already built in, and perhaps people are not needing PlayOn as much anymore.

Either way, while the company itself seems to be fine, I agree that the forums seem to have really stagnated. Maybe everyone has everything they want?

I like playon, I love what it does And am considering the premium. However Like sage it seems alot of the power comes from user generated and updated scripts, It seems like alot of those scripts no longer function and there is really no one talking about updating them. Alot of the scripts haven't been touched since 09. Infact a few of them prevented my playon from even starting. Good chunk of the meaningful banter on the forums is also dated, 09, 2010 years. It just seems scripts are no longer being updated really at all.

To top it off there is a miracle api out there that seems to be vaporware, Last update on it, I read to be, we will release it when we release it. Before that is was Feb 11, and before that was late 2010. This makes me wonder if they haven't run into a roadblock and it truly is vaporware and there just not telling people to keep from hurting sales.

Of course Playon themselves isn't going to admit it was dying and would go as far as to release occasional update to keep customers, However, Looking into it, IT seems the last meaningful update was released in mid of 2010.

My worry is Ill blow $80 bucks on it just to have them throw there hands up and it be junk the next month. Atleast with sage, I see a constant effort from both the community and the sage folks to keep up with the latest tech.

I really like playon, and I really like the way it works with Sage, Its just that if I were looking at trends it really seems like they may be ready to throw up there hands. I am really hoping someone show me or give me hope to the contrary as I would like to purchase the software.

Playon has a ton of options to pay for it. They even have a monthly plan if you don't want to shell out the 80 bucks for a lifetime license as well as the yearly license.

Also there is great technical support via email if you have problems. The only problem people are having at the moment is with roku skipping or some problem close to that but they tell people that stopping the stream for a minute or 2 and letting it buffer fixes that problem.

As for the scripts not working ,have you tried the ones at http://www.playonscripts.com/ as they tell you when they were last updated and if you create a free account there you can tell the plugin maker that the plugin your using no longer works and each working plugin there has a green check mark next to it.

Also they have plugins at http://www.playonlabs.net/ as well and if you get any there you should click the more link after choosing the plugin you want there and check the plugin health - if it says good then it should work with the newest version of playon.

By the way, I assume your talking about the playon plugin for sage tv when you say they don't update it as if you go to http://www.playon.tv/releasenotes they tend to update the heck out of playon - The playon plugin has not been updated since 2010 which is why your not seeing banter in the forums about it.

No the one for sage works great, No reason to update it. I did decide to go ahead and pay for it, I know there is other plans, however the $80 isn't to much. All the scripts I got were from playonscripts.com, These are the ones that seem like support and development seems to be waining. Ill try the other sites.

The only real issue im having is It doesn't matter the source, I can't seem to watch a show all the way thru on my ipad. about 1/2 way thru the show just stops like it was over. Although I haven't asked for support yet, Because the problem could very well be my router or server, Both which seem ready to kick the bucket. I have new hardware on the way and will be doing extensive upgrade and will see what happens from there. I really hope im wrong and playon isn't gonna dye soon.

traker1001,
your confusing the two programs - the playon software that costs 80 bucks is at http://www.playon.tv/ and you should update it each time they update it in case that was the problem with the ipad not playing a full video.

The playon plugin for sage tv is free and don't cost 80 bucks. It just ties in to the playon software above and has not been updated since 2010 mainly because it just works with the playon software that costs 80 bucks.

If your having problems with playon I suggest you go to http://www.playon.tv/ and update the software there as it has to be installed for you to be using the sage tv playon plugin and it may fix your problems.

If you dont pay the 80 dollars you can still use playon as playon lite - PlayOn Lite is absolutely 100% free for all users! It gives you access to "My Media" (all your local media files from your PC and home network), as well as the Pandora radio channel. No matter whether you buy a PlayOn license or not, you will always be able to use the PlayOn software for My Media and Pandora. Forever. For free.

Thats from the faq at http://www.playon.tv/faq
