3 seconds per second??? All my shows are dying!!!

Very weird goings on.... This happened once before with one show, but not again until I started using comskip.

I was watching 24, which recorded yesterday. I ran comskip last night, (just installed it), and today had a comskipped 24. Cool. Except part way through, the play bar started moving 3 seconds for every real second that passed. This means I could only watch part of the show. It means that while it says I have an hour of show recorded, I can only watch the first 20 minutes. Going to a point 40 minutes along the play bar gives me a point 40 minutes/3, or about 16 minutes, into the show. Doesn't matter how many times I start and stop the show, or if I say "Restart".....3 seconds per second!

I was watching American Idol tonight, with Comskip running in parallel and commercial detecting, (I started watching it about 25 minutes after it started, catching up to live). At 8 oclock, when idol ended, my playback, (which was still delayed by quite a bit...I think i was around the 35 minute mark), stuttered for a moment. I ignored it, then realized I was in the middle of a commerical, and skipped to the start of the next show segment. All of a sudden, the "play bar" at the bottom started advancing 3 seconds for every second that passed again. I also realized that while I had skipped to about 40 minutes into the recording, I was watching something that had played earlier in the show, right around the 16 minute mark.

Note: Now I'm watching NCIS. Recorded a while ago, (1/29 i think?) comskipped last night along with everything else....and it's working fine....1 second per second...we'll see if it changes halfway through!

What's going on? How do I fix it??

Thanks!!!
Keith

OK, some more info. I tried all the different choices available for video renderer (default video, video overlay, DX9 VMR), SageTV and Cyberlink video decoder, and DS and SageTV players.

I also tried loading it in VLC and WMP. WMP acted like Sage, advancing the little selector bar along the timeline very fast, (I was looking at last night's American Idol, and it plays about 2 or 3 MINUTES per minute)....then freezes at the end.

VLC shows the show as being 1:04 minutes long, which is about as long as Sage or WMP plays for, but after it passes the 1:04 mark, it keeps playing! So I have my show, but only in VLC, and it still looks like the timeline is broken....

So I think I want to change whatever ENCODES my shows. How do I do that? I only see options for "decoding" and "playback". I think whatever is encoding the shows is hosing up the timeline.

Thanks!!

What encodes the shows is the video capture device. In your case the HVR-1250 tuners (unless you have others).

Have you always been using Vista 64, and if so, did it ever work correctly? Seems like a driver problems to me is the reason I ask.

Your HVR 1250 is a software encoder card for analog. It uses the Hauppauge MCE Soft Encoder that is installed with the WinTV software. ATSC or ClearQAM is streamed directly to the hard drive and as such does not need encoding. The better chpice for a tuner would be an analog that does hardware encoding like the 1600, 1800 or others. The soft encoder also requires a P4 of at 2.2GHz or better.

Hmm,

I'm recording off of ClearQAM, so if I understand correctly my TV doesn't need to be encoded? It just streams directly onto my HDD? Processor power is just fine, I don't get close to loading the chips unless I use comskip.

So if I'm not encoding, why do three different players, (sage, WMP, VLC), all fail at playing these few files normally?

Also, to clarify, this is intermittent. Only around 5% of the HD shows I record, none of the SD shows so far. I have always used Vista 64. Also, for the MOST part, it's FOX shows, (24 and American Idol so far) but happened once on an ABC show (Grey's anatomy). I'm not so worried about american idol, but the wife will have my giblets and my computer's RAM in a sling if this hoses up another Grey's.

Then it's probably a question of signal quality. It is probably not getting a very good quality signal on those channels you're having problems with.

The only other things I can think to check are:

Double check the registry edit to be sure you didn't misspell anything.

Make sure you rebooted after making the registry edit.

Make sure you have the latest driver installed from hauppauge.com.

Make sure you have the latest release of SageTV (v6.5.9)

And if all else fails, submit a bug report to SageTV.

New Update: Now it's every show I record on FOX. All my FOX shows from this week have had screwed up time bars. Some skip 3 seconds per second, some skip 5 minutes per second.

Double checked. Rebooted. Got the latest driver. Running 6.4.8, not 6.5.9, how do I upgrade?

Sounds like this isn't a very common problem Bad news for me. Real sad not being able to watch anything FOX.

Shut SageTV completely down. Download the latest from the download page and then run it. (Make a copy of your directory first somewhere else. Just in case.)

One note that might help you, the only times I've had problems like this, a trip thru VideoRedo fixed the file. I know this is an added cost, but their Automatic Repair Synchronization really is the best.

Thanks Gerry and Matt.

Installed Sage 6.5.9, still won't work. Deleted all the channels in video sources, re-scanned, still no dice. I've tried every video renderer/filter/ whatever choice I could do, no dice.

Matt, that sounds like not a bad idea, but I can't stand the idea of having to pay 80 bucks to fix the shows....

Boy do I miss my FOX Shows!!

I was having this problem and the registry hack fixed it completely - but now I have a different, less severe issue. Every now and then the show just skips 10 seconds or so. It's so seamless you almost don't notice it except all of a sudden the dialog makes no sense. Kind of like the time skips in that Futurama episode :-) Anyone have any other ideas? If I watch 4 hours worth of shows I probably see 3 skips.

I am experiencing this strange timeline issue as well - I can only watch the first 20min or so of an hour recording. It has only happened on a small number of recordings (both NTSC and ATSC recordings) - so far only 3. I am using the Hauppauge HVR-2250 tuner card and I recently updated the driver so I am going to go back and look at when the recordings were made vs when I updated the driver. As well, I'll give the registry fix a shot.

BTW, I am using 6.5.9 and Vista 64-bit.

I will keep you posted.

This thread may or may not help you. But I had a similar problem with the same tuner (although I don't think the tuner has anything to do with it). It appears that my problem was Java related.
