WHS is a standalone operating system all by itself. It is a 32 bit operating system based on Windows Server 2003 but you can install it on a 64 bit capable system.

And yes, with placeshifter you can watch stuff from your house in his house. The quality is pretty good. Probably not real good on a big screen, but pretty nice on a smaller one.

I don't know anything about the HDPVR because I have never used one.

But you can use all sorts of combinations of tuners. Analog tuners, Digital tuners, HDPVR, and some people even use firewire to get the tv into Sage from there cable box.

I don't have any HD programming except what I get through my cable without a box. I use my HD Homeruns with that to get the major networks in HD. My Directv boxes are older analog boxes that I have going to a Hauppauge PVR-500 analog tuner card by using S-Video and audio cables. That gives me all the rest of my stuff in SD.

Pretty much if you want to do it, Sage can. Some easier to setup than others, but it's pretty good...

Take a read here: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15871

If you don't set this up it will continually prompt you for a tuner.

Actually, I don't believe that is the case anymore. It no longer nags you about installing a tuner source if you don't have one. So the fake network encoder is unnecessary.
