Direct TV

I am considering getting satellite tv instead of cable, but I will not do it if I cannot get it to work as cable does with my Sage and Hauppauge setups on my two computers. The satellite is a digital rather than an analogue signal, so I figure that will be a problem; and I am concerned there will not be a Sage live tv program guide for Direct TV, or if there is, that it will not afford the same control I have over what I watch and record as it does with cable.

Someone please direct this satellite newbie to a simple and complete how to on SageTV with satellite tv. Or just be kind enough to tell me what I need to know.

Thank you.

with directv, you need a IR transmitter to change the channel on the satellite box. the computer records that through the s-video. sage has guide listings for that.

cable is a little easier because you just connect the cable to the computer and it can get channels 2-99.

I have found that the picture quality is much better from the directv box s-video than from cable.

It should work just like your cable boxes do. Even though sat is transmitted digitally, the boxes still output analog (assuming S-Video/composite).

Some (most?) DirecTV boxes can be controlled via serial which should work better/be more reliable than IR if you can go that way.
