Sagetv and Ubuntu 10.04->10.10 Upgrade Experience

It runs but a little fixing is required.

For some reason when doing the upgrade to 10.10 the 32bit JVM gets dropped.

Reinstalling the "old way" by running dpkg -i --force-architecture on the .deb file I used in 9.x and 10.04 didn't work properly. There were broken sym links for a lot of the JVM/lib jar files.

Fortunately the fix was easy, started synaptic package manager and the ia32-sun-java6-bin was available and I installed it from the package manager and now all is well.

Note I use the method of editing the startsage shell script to add the 32 bit java path before any others to get sage to find the correct 32bit java. I found the other methods for resolving to the 32-bit JVM confusing and error prone.

Now happily running ubuntu 10.10 and waiting for 11.04 to come out and break something new.

That package is not available here, on a clean install of 10.10.

What do your sources look like?

System -> Administration -> Update Manager -> Settings -> Ubuntu Software
System -> Administration -> Update Manager -> Settings -> Other Software

Manually downloading the archive version (not the .deb) appears to work fine with 64-bit open jdk except that TV playback occurs in a separate mplayer window. (see attached screenshot)

Placeshifter will not launch with 3D support enabled, but I half-expected this because the GPU is a Radeon X1550, which requires an open source driver (on this x.org server).

Ubuntu have moved the Sun Java packages into the Contribs repository since Lucid. These aren't enabled by default.

Unfortunately it looks like the Debian opensource police have had their way so the standard repositories only contain the OpenJRE/JDK.

Thank you!

Enabling the "Canonical Partners" sources made the ia32-sun-java-bin package show up as available. It'll be a while before I can test if this fixes (some of) the issues on that PC though.

Thinking about it you might need to add the ia32-libs if they're not already installed.

I had issues with an Ubuntu server where Sun Java 32 was there could ls the file, change permissions etc, but it kept throwing a file not found error. Turned out to be a useless error message as it was a library dependancy missing not Java.

Installing the ia32-libs package solved the 32 bit library issues with java.
