Smile My Beta Upgrade Experience ... So far ...

So here is my OOB experience upgrading from 6.1.9 to 6.2.4 on my test box.

Basic System:
  • Vista Ultimate
  • NVidia PureVideo
  • Java 1.6.0_01
  • Dual 3 GHz Xeon CPU's
  • 2 GB RAM
  • NVidia GeForce 7950 GX2 Video Card
  • Hauppauge PVR 250 Tuner
  • 300gb SATA HD (for OS & Apps)
  • Infrant ReadyNAS+ Network Storage (for content)

6.1.9 Editorial:
My experience was less than desirable and I never upgraded my production box off of 4.x because of this.

Problems I could not overcome:
  • Constant problems with Imported Videos from NAS. Videos would appear in Sage, then disappear at will. A day or so later they reappear but not everything would show up, folders or shows. Subfolders. Very much a pain. I tried everything, even working with Sage Support and sending over many debug log files, but I never had a solution. Gave Up! That said, Photos and Music were fine from the NAS??
  • At least 5 or six times for what ever reason wiz.bin decided to reset itself. What I mean is All of my Sage Recording would disappear, not the files, but just in Sage! This was bad. I tried deleting all the show files, replacing wiz.bin, etc. but no success.
  • For some reason, my EPG disappeared (no, I had solid network and internet connections) and took forever to reappear. This only happened once, but was not motivating.
  • Lastly, my favorites would disappear.

So far, so good ...
Did the usual, backed up SageTV folder and installed 6.2.4 over 6.19 with some concern that problems would carry over.

The good news is;
  • My Imported Videos issue seems to have gone away. Well, one day later they are all there and subfolders show up fine. Photos and Music are also fine. We'll see if this lasts. But, I am hopeful.
  • I have a few items set for Manual Record and added some Favorites. Will see if wiz.bin resets or not.
  • The EPG seems fine and has not disappeared.
  • My Favorites seem fine and have not disappeared.

Weid things happen?;
  • When I was in the setup process I deleted and re-input my Video Recording Directories and Media Center Import Directories. In both cases if I selected "Up Directory" until I got to the root and clicked "Network" I received a "Invalid Directory" Message. I had to select "Specify..." in order to get to my NAS. Today I seem to be able to click "Network" and get there, but interestingly Sage shows two networks ... MSHOME and HOME. I have no clue why MSHOME is there. When I click it I get the same results, but my real network name HOME seems to allow me to click through the path??
  • Another thing I noticed was that after watching snippets of shows just to play around, "Partial Recordings" did not show up in SageTV Recordings, but did show up in "Extra: View Partial Recordings". In addition, when I deleted them all in Partial Recordings, the left Category Section would clear, but the right would still show the partial recording. When I exiting Partial Recordings and came back it would be gone.
  • Hmm, I just setup to Load at Windows Startup in the System Tray. When I reboot it does not launch Sage and place it in the tray? I also have it setup aas a Service. Should that matter?

My initial impression is much more positive than 6.1.9 and do expect some issues based upon the fact that it is beta and I see others have found bugs, but so far this one has gotten over some of my bigger show stopper issues.

I'll post back as I proceed.

T.

Hmm, first thing I'd guess is that Sage is showing zulu time, instead of PDT time, which is 7 hours ahead right now. Is it 7 hours or actually 7:20 fast?

That was a common issue with VIsta and Sage if you were using Java 1.4 or 1.5. The fix was to update to Java 1.6, but I see that you already have that listed in your OP.

You know what? You may have a point. With my Sage Test Server remember upgrading to Java 6.0 during the DST change back in March.

Installing the 6.2.4 Client on my other Vista box I recollect seeing Java 1.4.x installing. I'll bet you nailed it ... I'll upgrade Java an let you know.

Side note: I would think that a new version of the Sage install should be smart enough to know if I am using XP or Vista and provide the current version.

Thanks for the tip! T.

Oh ... And it was exactly 7 hours ahead ...

Just noticed another odd thing with this release. Without reason when I go in to Impoted Videos and Photos the number of Rows and Columns change. Usually from I think 4 Rows & 4 Colums (if I rememberthe numbers) after install to 5 Rows & 1 Columns (where it is now). I have seen it flip twice now ...

I'll watch this and report back ...

The clock thing is a java issue with Vista. Upgrade to java 1.6 and it will fix it.

Mightyt,

Are you able to record to / playback from your NAS? How many tunners? I'm just wondering if it is fast enough for say 4 tuners recording while streaming out a couple HD programs?

Thanks
