Hauppauge MediaMVP and DVDs

I just acquired a Hauppauge MediaMVP Media Extender and it seems to work great. (I am using it with a SD TV.) I copied the VOB files from DVDs into directories that SageTV can access. It plays some of the DVDs just fine, but for the others, I just hear the audio with no picture or a band across the bottom of the screen. (See attached.)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
John

Lightbulb Solution!

I found the answer. It turns out that some of the DVDs (the ones I could not play) were recorded in HD. The Hauppauge MediaMVP is not able to play these DVDs.

The Solution:

I just got a new SageTV HD Media Extender and it is able to play ALL the DVDs. I also really like the picture generated by the unit.

I think that the MVP will play these *if* your server has enough horsepower to transcode them to MPEG2

i have a mvp also. when I had a 1.8 GHz dual core cpu, I could not watch any dvd's. Now I have a 3.4 GHz dual core and I can play some dvd's (i only have regular dvd's and no blue rays). cool feature because my understanding is that the mvp isn't suppose to be able to do this at all. anyway, if you want to play dvd's, you are going have to move up to the H200 (the mvp is not a sage product and isn't supported by sage like the H200). I don't have one (H200)... yet, but I have been backing up my dvd's for when I do get one. the mvp works good enough for "union work". when, I get a hd tv, I will be getting a H200 the same day. but until then, the mvp will do.

movie's aren't recorded in HD. they record in analog (analog is a perfect representation of what really happened, video and sound, however it is terrible at reproduction, this is why digital was created). that is why you see movies in blue ray that were recorded decades before digital and HD.

this all means, that is 5 years, you will be able to buy the Star Wars "6-ology" in 3D. George Lucas just won't let it go.
