Hauppauge MediaMVP

I assume that these things are roughly the same as sagetv media extender? Can they be made to work with a sagetv like interface? I found a cheap used one on eBay and it would be really handy to have that instead of a dedicated computer, but I don't wanna buy it to find out that it won't work properly.

I'm surprised you're saying that it's 'too bad'.

SageTV is a great interface for interacting and programming a PVR.

If you want FREE access to your saved SageTV files then you can install Nielm's Web-based User Interface located in the Download Section of the forum and use a PC to stream the files. I've heard some people can mod an xbox or a PS2 to get access to their recordings.
You might be able to even download the Hauppauge MVP software and cobble together something to give you access to your recordings.

But if you want to interact with the SageTV interface and use it's features, and have the MVP auto download the software, then I think a one-time license of $30 sounds great!

You can get the license for $25 at http://www.pcalchemy.com/index.php/c...cdd4d0e6907c75

The MVP key is the same as the Placeshifter key. So if you already have PS key and only need to use one at a time you can share the key between PS and MVP.

Yea, it's not that it's really alot of money, i just meant that by the time i get the extender, and a licence i'll have almost spent the same amount as a Sage extender, but if I can use my placeshifter key on it that would be fantastic. It has the 30-something button remote, will it still work?

Hauppauge MediaMVP uses web base html to view stuff and jpg well the ones I've made for their GUI uses jpg instead of BMP..
Find below and the Black Raptor at: http://tipstir.blogspot.com/

Main Menu

Videos (recordings from Sagetv Server)

In the above if you press Info or Menu button you'll get a popup menu showing Play All and etc.. it's the same type of menu
you see in Music. Took a while to re-code that into Videos but it works..

I was thinking of making a SAGETV one but that's going to take time. Just better to get the licenses I say so you can use the Sagetv on your MVP like you do on the PC.

The more recent units come with a 45 button remote, but you may want to check with SageTV to see if there are any issues with older units.

BTW, the MVPs just have flash-ram and 'boot' off your LAN to a bootp server each time they're powered up. Nothing to flash.
They'll connect to their Hauppauge, or in our case the SageTV server, the bootp server and software are already there to support the MVP, you just needed the license -- and since you have a Placeshifter License already installed you're all set.

You just need to enable the server within SageTV (via setup) and plug in the MVP.

[Edit] I 'think' Tipster is showing the option of using the Hauppauge Software to access files on a server, or SageTV server, but remember that you don't have access to the SageTV GUI using this method. Cool Graphics That's not my father's Hauppauge MVP Display GUI any more.

ok so from what i've read, this is how i understand it...

The MVP box looks for a bootp server.
The machine running the Sage Server is the bootp server.
the MVP box sees the bootp server, and boots the sage interface?

I also have one of the 45 button remotes that i'm not using (replaced with a nicer sony remote commander ). Can i use it with the MVP?

Yes, the MVP connects to the SageTV server and ends up running the full SageTV UI that you see on the server or any other client. You can also choose to use a custom STV, if you want, and each client can be set to use a different STV, if you choose.

By using the SageTV server to run the MVP's interface, you also get the ability to transcode and play media that the MVP can't normally play on its hardware decoder, though this requires a powerful enough cpu on your server to handle the transcoding work.

Yes.

I've just did a quick search of the forum and, yes, you can use the Hauppauge 45 button remote in place of the 34 button. And I'm pretty sure you can program other 'smart' remotes to work with the MVP as well.

Just to say again what Opus4 said, all your SD recorded content will play beautifully using the MVP built-in hardware decoder. Other formats not natively supported on the MVP will be transcoded by your server on-the-fly.

I use 4 MVP's with both kinds of remote. They don't care.. Got them back in the $39.00 Radio Shack days.
