Process Rules

I'm using comskip and comskip monitor set to allow 2 concurrent threads. I also use the integrated sagetv transcoder to convert videos and transfer them to a zen device. The processer in my server is a meager 2.2ghz pentium dual core, and i'd like to set a rule somehow that prevents comskip from processing files while the transcoder is running. What is the easiest way to do this? I'd kind of like to continue to use comskip monitor, but i'm willing to move to something else if it can handle both chores pretty easily.

I switched to dirmon2 and am very happy with it. It won't start processing a file if there's less than xx% of cpu capacity free.

You are going to have to move on to something more powerful like Sage Job Queue.

I think I looked into that awhile back, seemed kind of difficult to setup. What would be the simplest thing to do?

I've been looking at DirMon2, is it capable of setting a condition where it won't run comskip if sagetv transcoder is running? I'm hesitant to use SJQ since I'm not looking to do anything too complicated.

It doesn't look for any particular program running, just as much free cpu % as you specify. If the transcoder is running it's a safe bet that cpu is being used more than 50%.

yes... basically you assign each task a certain value... it will keep assigning tasks until the total value of the running tasks adds up to the total available.

you wont be disappointed if you go with SJQ... dirmon2 hasnt been updated in quite sometime and while powerful SJQ is really the way to go... it will do everything (from a configuration/setup/customization point) and will do soooooooo much more.

OK, I've setup DirMon2 and i'm pretty happy with it so far. I have a couple of problems though....I set the "resources required" to 25 and the "total resources available" to 50 with the understanding that I could run 2 instances of comskip at a time using 50% of the total cpu resources. Each instance is using 50% apiece so when 2 are running the system is maxed out. What am I doing wrong?
Also, how long does sagetv wait to delete a tv file that wasn't set to record? Comskip occasionaly processes files before sage gets rid of them, and I want to time it so that there is just enough time for the temp files to be removed before dirmon scans for new files.

The total resources available has nothing whatsoever to do with the CPU utilization.

Is there a way I can add the "playnice" command in there for dirmon or do I have to do that in the .ini file for comskip itself?

i have no idea what the playnice setting does but my guess is you need to set it in the comskip ini file

Just set it to run comskip at idle priority, and it won't hog resources from higher priority tasks. It will just use 'leftover' cpu cycles.
