grey screens

I have two tuners - a hd-pvr and a hauppauage hvr-1800. Shows recorded by the hd-pvr are fine, but those recorded by hvr-1800 are just grey screens. The audio is fine, it's just the video. I tried setting the recording quality to various settings, but that didn't help. I played back the recording using VLC, and it was still a grey screen, which leads me to believe something's wrong with the encoder. I run SageTV on a Windows 7 x64 ultimate machine. Any suggestions on how I might solve this problem? Thanks!

I wasn't aware I should be using the SVideo input. I was using the coaxial input directly from the cable. Should I be using the S Video input instead?

I tried S-Video - it was the same result.

I noticed something with both the s video and coxial inputs. The screen I see isn't all grey. There is a very faint picture of the channel on the screen. However, it's almost as if the picture is covered by a very dense grey fog

EDIT: Ok, I've discovered something very strange. The greyness was just a result of the picture settings being screwy. The sharpness, contrast, saturation, etc... were all at 0. I've set them all to 127 and now I get a picture. Hurray!

However, the picture still looks rather bad - what are the optimal settings to use?

I'm mildly surprised that no one seems to have encountered this problem previously. Setting all the controls to 127 does make the picture look viewable, but hardly great. Could someone peak inside their settings and post what the settings are set to? Thanks!
